Second SOffie Project Meeting and Workshop at the University of Duisburg-Essen
The second project meeting of the SOffie (System Integration Offshore Wind Energy) project took place on 11 June 2026 at the University of Duisburg-Essen’s Essen campus. The meeting was followed by a workshop hosted by RWE at its headquarters in Essen.
The meeting began with progress updates from the project partners and a discussion of potential future offshore hub configurations. Offshore hubs were considered as network nodes that connect offshore wind farms to multiple electricity markets and transmission systems. In the subsequent workshop with RWE, these configurations were examined with respect to the uncertainties and risks associated with their development and operation. The discussions focused particularly on the investor perspective and the challenges of successfully integrating large-scale offshore wind energy into the European electricity market.
SOffie is a three-year project funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK). It brings together leading universities and industry partners to address the challenges of integrating large-scale offshore wind power into the German energy system.
The project consortium includes TU Dresden (project coordinator), the University of Duisburg-Essen, DIW Berlin, TU Berlin, and AquaVentus. A key strength of SOffie is its close collaboration with industry and sector stakeholders, including RWE, EnBW, Amprion, 50Hertz, AquaVentus, and the German Offshore Wind Farm Operators Association (BWO).
The Chair of Energy Economics at TU Dresden, as project coordinator, thanks all project partners for their valuable contributions and extends special appreciation to the House of Energy, Climate and Finance at the University of Duisburg-Essen for hosting the meeting and workshop.
