New Publication in the Review of Managerial Science
Prof. Dr. Lars Hornuf and Daniel Vrankar have published a new article titled “How new business models shape innovation spillovers: insights from the new space economy” in the Review of Managerial Science. The study examines how different business models influence the spread of innovations from the space industry to other sectors.
The study draws on a unique dataset of 35,608 patent applications covering both space innovations and the inventions that cite them. The authors combine patent metrics with network analysis to examine the potential, realization, and direction of technological spillovers.
The results show that, at the firm level, New Space companies generate significantly more realized spillovers than traditional aerospace corporations. At the same time, the industries that benefit from these spillovers differ: While traditional corporations contribute particularly to spillovers in digital communications and green technologies, New Space companies generate stronger spillovers into manufacturing.
Furthermore, New Space companies tend to occupy peripheral positions in the innovation network. The results thus illustrate that even companies with less central network connections can generate significant knowledge spillovers. The study provides insights for designing innovation strategies and assessing the economic and societal benefits of space investments.
