Successful conclusion of FOSTER-Project
With the presentation of their research results at the International Conference on Operations Research 2024 in Munich, Maximilian Hubmann and Markus Höfling successfully completed their student research project ‘Development of metaheuristics for scheduling with lot streaming’. The project was funded by the Funds for Student Research (FOSTER) programme and enabled the students to spend 4 months working intensively on algorithms for solving scheduling problems.
The aim was to quantify the potential of lot streaming, i.e. the early transfer of partial lots to subsequent production stages, in hybrid flow shops. This requires efficient solution methods in order to find good solutions even for large problem instances. The students combined and extended established methods in order to fulfil the problem-specific requirements and implemented them in a programming language that was still new to them. With the support of Prof Dr Janis Neufeld and Daniel Zähringer, they also gained an insight into everyday research at the chair.
