Field trip on 22 November 2012
GlobalFoundries
Dresden
This year's field trip took place on 22 November 2012 in collaboration with VWI e. V. Students of the Faculty of Economics and sub-departmental staff visited the semiconductor manufacturer, GLOBALFOUNDRIES, at its site in Dresden.
The American foundry was spun off from the semiconductor manufacturing arm of AMD in 2009. The sole shareholder is the Emirate of Abu Dhabi's Advanced Technology Investment Company (ATIC). GLOBALFOUNDRIES Fab 1 manufactures 300mm wafers in 45, 40, 32 and 28nm technologies. A new clean-room building, which is expected to increase overall capacity to 80,000 wafer starts per month in future, is currently being constructed.
A 10-minute video about the process involved in manufacturing the processors was followed by a short talk on the development of the semiconductor industry worldwide. Afterwards, parts of the Subfab (plants below the actual Fab) and the still-incomplete clean-room building were visited. A joint lunch in the company's own canteen rounded off the interesting field trip.
