Sustainability competence in the circular economy: New research project and new course
Table of contents
Consumer participation has gained relevance for consumer policy, which is illustrated by the concept of the consumer citizen. In the context of third mission, universities also play a role in educating sustainability awareness (and action) and bringing it into society. The Chair of Business Education and Management Training is currently working on a project and a new seminar in this field.
About the project
The project "Consumer Participation through Sustainability Competence in the Circular Economy" shows how consumer behavior can be mobilized to achieve societal goals. A lack of sustainability action is attributed to a lack of contextual knowledge among consumers. The aim of the project is to find out how contextual knowledge can be built up, how sustainability action can be influenced and how sustainability competence can be increased.

About the seminar
In line with the project, a course will also be held in the winter semester of 2021/22. The seminar „Kreislaufwirtschaft und Nachhaltigkeitskompetenz“ held by PD Dr. Inéz Labucay deals with an area that has received little attention so far, but is central to the success of the sustainable circular economy: the involvement of the consumer who demands sustainable mobility or sustainable everyday products, or who adheres to traditional consumer behavior. Individuals also face fundamental structural changes as (future) workers, such as the elimination of traditional sectors and the need for new, often data-based services. Both, big data and the transition to Industry 4.0 in turn challenge successes achieved in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, but also enable resource savings. Individual consumers in their individual choices must therefore be actively involved in shaping a sustainable economy.
