New Research Group on Sustainability and Biodiversity Management

With the establishment of the new research group on Sustainability and Biodiversity Management, the Faculty of Business and Economics is further expanding its profile in a key field of the future. Under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Remmer Sassen, the new research group is dedicated to addressing current issues in sustainability and biodiversity management, combining scientific research with concrete challenges facing business and society.

The ongoing research projects demonstrate that the research group has already launched a wide range of activities. The“BioScore”project, for example, is examining how biodiversity can be integrated into credit rating and risk assessment procedures at private financial institutions. Funded by the German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU), the project thus addresses an increasingly relevant issue for the financial sector and sustainable corporate governance.

The international Erasmus+ project“inFUELencer”also focuses on concrete transformation processes in the economy. Together with international partners, the research group is developing continuing education and training programs designed to help gas stations and fuel retailers further develop their business models in the context of Europe’s green transition. Following the successful grant application, the project is now in the implementation phase.

In addition to its research activities, the group has also secured funding for other initiatives, such as the Jackstädt International Teaching Grants from the Dr. Werner Jackstädt Foundation. In collaboration with Prof. Dr. Namchul Shin from Pace University in New York, this funding will facilitate international exchange in research and teaching. A block course on “GIS Applications and AI Integration” is planned for January 2027 at TU Dresden, focusing on the use of geographic information systems and artificial intelligence to address complex societal and sustainability-related issues (to the course announcement).

Thanks to these projects and successful applications for third-party funding and grants, the new research group has already become a visible force in research, international collaboration, and teaching shortly after its founding. The scope of its work ranges from biodiversity and sustainable transformation to environmental and climate strategies, as well as resource efficiency and innovative digital approaches. The research group takes an interdisciplinary approach and collaborates with partners from academia, industry, and politics.
