Successful Application for a Jackstädt International Teaching Grant
Prof. Dr. Remmer Sassen and his team are pleased to announce that their application forthe “Jackstädt International Teaching Grants”from the Dr. Werner Jackstädt Foundation has been approved. The Teaching Grants aim to promote the internationalization of German universities by integrating international lectures with intensive block seminars. Together with Prof. Dr. Namchul Shin from Pace University in New York, Prof. Dr. Remmer Sassen has proposed a block course titled “GIS Applications and AI Integration,” which Namchul Shin will teach at TU Dresden from January 11–13, 2027.
Brief description of the course: The course introduces innovative applications of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), with a focus on solving real-world economic and societal challenges. Rather than viewing GIS as a standalone technical tool, the course treats GIS as an integrated system for addressing complex problems such as sustainability, urban planning, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. A distinctive feature of the course is its systems architecture perspective, which embeds GIS within a broader ecosystem of data pipelines, analytics, and artificial intelligence.

We are very pleased to welcome Namchul Shin back to TU Dresden early next year. Through the Dresden Fellowship Program, Namchul Chin was a Senior Fellow with Prof. Dr. Remmer Sassen from August through mid-November 2023. In 2025, Namchul Shin returned to the Chair of Business Administration, esp. Sustainability Management and Environmental Accounting. Among other activities, he participated in the NAMA 2025 conference, where he presented together with Vera Braun and Sarah Bärsch the current status of their research on biodiversity reporting in the coal mining industry.
