Press statement by Prof. Dr. Lars Hornuf on the start of the movie2k process in Leipzig
The trial against the two former operators of the illegal streaming portal "movie2k", who offered pirated copies of films and series for years and converted the profits into bitcoins, began in Leipzig on 24.02.2026. The proceedings at the regional court are now hearing to what extent the Free State of Saxony will receive the 2.64 billion bitcoins seized from a distress sale.
In an article published yesterday by ZDF in the magazine heute in Deutschland, the background to the movie2k case and the aims of the trial that has been started are explained in more detail. In his statement, Prof. Dr. Lars Hornuf (Chair of Business Administration, in particular Finance and Financial Services) addresses, among other things, the question of why cryptocurrencies could also be used for fraudulent activities in the future.
