Looking back at ICIS 2023: One TREO talk, four paper presentations, and a Best Paper Award

This year's International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS) in Hyderabad, India, was particularly successful for the Chair of Information Systems, especially Business Engineering, in many ways.

Most notably, the paper "Job Crafting in The Era of Algorithmic Management" written by Isabell Lippert, Kathrin Kirchner, Martin Wiener, and Carol Saunders won the Best Paper Award in honor of TP Liang (1st runner-up). We are particularly pleased that this award also underlines the successful collaboration with our Distinguished Research Fellow (DRF) Kathrin Kirchner. The paper examines the influence of algorithmic management, i.e. the use of learning algorithms to manage employees, in the context of Lieferando. The authors find that delivery service workers are able to improve and facilitate their day-to-day work on their own (also referred to as job crafting) and received much positive feedback from the information systems community.

were also well received.

In addition to the regular papers, Isabell Lippert also presented an abstract on the planned studies of the Model Project Smart City (MPSC) at the conference. She moderated the "Technology, Research, Education, Opinion" (TREO) Talk session "Thinking about Research, Data and Digital Technology" and presented the abstract "Rethinking Open Data Stakeholder Value". This was one of eight abstracts presented in this session and received constructive feedback. Generally, TREO Talks provide a unique opportunity to present and discuss innovative research ideas at an early stage in a dynamic and interactive forum.

As part of the MPSC, supported by the City of Dresden, the Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Construction and the KfW Bank, a series of empirical studies are now in the pipeline. Participating in the ICIS conference enabled us to make valuable contacts that will be important for the future research and development of the project.
