Understanding positive contributions to sustainability. A systematic review

The article “Understanding positive contributions to sustainability - A systematic review” written by Samanthi Dijkstra-Silva, Stefan Schaltegger and Philip Beske-Janssen has been published in the Journal of Environmental Management. The authors conducted a systematic literature review of 328 research articles dealing with sustainability performance measurement and assessment.

This review analyzes the understandings of positive contributions to sustainability and identified three distinct perspectives– an operationalization, stakeholder, and transformation perspective. The authors suggest that a positive sustainability contribution aims to bring about sustainability transformation, considers the environmental, economic and social context, and is operationalized to facilitate decision-making and the implementation of effective sustainability measures.
