Successful Participation at the European Conference on Information Systems (ECIS) 2026
From 15 to 17 June 2026, many members of the ISIH and WIBE Information Systems chairs participated in the 34th European Conference on Information Systems (ECIS 2026) in Milan. Under the conference theme, "Reimagining Digital Technology for Business, Management, and Society," the conference brought together researchers from around the world and, as one of the leading academic conferences in the field of Information Systems, provided numerous opportunities for scholarly exchange and international networking.
During the conference, the team presented two research papers.
Eric Börner presented the paper "Explaining the Sustainability of OGD-Based Applications: A Generativity Perspective".
The paper examines the factors that influence the long-term sustainability of applications based on Open Government Data (OGD). It addresses the question of why some OGD-based applications remain viable over time, while others fail to evolve despite their considerable societal potential. The findings provide new insights into the technical and social conditions required for the sustainable operation of OGD-based applications.
In addition, Isabell Lippert presented the paper "A Typology of City-level Chief Data Officers in the Public Sector".
This paper investigates the different roles of Chief Data Officers (CDOs) in municipal governments. It develops a typology that distinguishes four role profiles for data management at the municipal level and describes their respective strategic orientations. The findings provide guidance for municipalities in designing CDO positions and support the development of data-driven public administration.
In addition to the paper presentations, the participants attended workshops and engaged in a wide range of networking activities. The exchange with international colleagues provided valuable inspiration for future research and opened up new opportunities for international collaboration.
A particular highlight of the conference was the Best Reviewer Award presented to Dix Rölke. This distinction recognizes his outstanding commitment and the exceptional quality of his reviews during the conference's peer-review process.
Participation in ECIS 2026 highlights the international visibility of the research conducted at the ISIH and WIBE chairs and further strengthens their engagement with the global Information Systems research community.
The research was conducted as part of the Smart Cities Model Project (MPSC) and was funded by the City of Dresden, the German Federal Ministry for Housing, Urban Development and Building (BMWSB), and KfW.
