Research presentation at HICSS 2023 - Maui, Hawaii, USA
The annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS) which was held in presence in 2023 for the first time in two years, brings together researchers from around the world to present and discuss the latest research in the field of information systems (IS). This time, from January 3-6, a wide range of topics were presented, from technology-enabled collaboration to future focal points for research, particularly emerging from the repercussions of the COVID19-pandemic.
Isabell Lippert, doctoral candidate of the Chair of Information Systems, esp. Business Engineering presented her research paper on "Context Matters: The Use of Algorithmic Management Mechanisms in Platform, Hybrid and Traditional Work Contexts" in the track "Organizational Systems and Technology" of the 56th HICSS which she co-authored with Prof. Dr. Kathrin Kirchner (furthermore Distinguished Research Fellow at the Faculty of Economics, TU Dresden) and Prof. Dr. Martin Wiener. The systematic literature review focuses on the use of algorithmic management (AM) mechanisms in different work contexts, e.g., delivery and ride hailing services, discussing different usage patterns.
With its origin in the platform economy, consisting primarily of freelancers, AM represents a special case when transferred to work contexts for employees with fixed employment contracts and for their managers, especially in traditional organizations. Therefore, it depends on the intention behind the use of the AM mechanisms, on the status of the workers or even the qualification level of an employee, to determine in which way a mechanism of algorithmic management, e.g., the recording of work results, can be transferred.
The subsequent discussion which was enabled by the presentation, resulted in numerous points of contact and promising ideas regarding the further development of the identified usage patterns.
