TU Dresden Collaborative Online International, Interdisciplinary & Intercultural Learning
Kurzbeschreibung (Deutsch)
TU Dresden (TUD) extends its international orientation by enhancing virtual mobility and internationalisation@home, building on both its E-learning and internationalisation strategies. A Virtual Collaboration Hub (VCHub, applied for in DAAD IMKD programme) is since then in stepwise development, based on internal resources from the coordinator for E-learning, the Zentrum für interkulturelles Lehren und Lernen (ZiLL), and TUD’s internationalisation strategy unit. Together they provide a common framework for digital support of physical and virtual mobility projects between TUD and its international partners. They coordinate different bottom-up initiatives for virtual mobility at TUD by linking their projects with existing learning and teaching activities at all partners’ institutions and bringing the relevant actors into contact with each other. The TUD COIIIL application is starting from two strong collaborations and premises:
The first steppingstone is the well-established cooperation between TUD, Chair of Information Management (WIIM), and Shiraz University, Iran, Advances Control Laboratory (ACL), based on MOUs from 2016 and 2018. Following TUD’s Virtual Collaborative Learning (VCL) framework, two collaborative virtual mobility projects took place so far, with mixed student teams from TUD and Shiraz U. collaborating 6-8 weeks in a virtual classroom on a common case, tightly guided by qualified E-tutors. In 2019, we received DAAD group study exchange funding (Project No. 57481021). The project was reported on the DAAD Virtual Exchange conference in 12/19. In 2020, it was extended and transferred to the collaborative platform MS 365, which allows intensified Learning Analytics and enables E-tutors to optimise their supervision and feedback activities as well as to inform the student teams about their performance. The integration into the curricula of both partner institutions has already been agreed upon. Both sides plan to integrate an international collaborative virtual mobility module into their respective local curricula. The VCL-based virtual mobility module is used as a good practice example. Due to its completely online accessibility on a collaborative platform, it already allows students to participate and gain international experience and intercultural competencies, independent on whether or not they can and want to participate in physical mobility (i.e. due to financial restrictions or other social or physical barriers). Within the TUD-COIIIL activities, the model will be adapted to other faculties and learning & teaching projects, and further developed, following respective objectives:
(1) The TU Dresden/Shiraz U. project shall focus on the integration of virtual laboratory experiments and on the extension of Social Learning Analytics, integrating also qualitative instruments (e.g. text mining), based on linguistic rules and existing prototypical solutions.
(2) In addition to the Faculty of Business and Economics at TUD, we also plan to integrate a VCLbased virtual mobility project module into the curriculum of a new master programme on Digital Humanities at TUD - Department of Humanities and Social Sciences. This could foster in future the planned tighter cooperation between TU Dresden and Stellenbosch U. in South Africa.
(3) Furthermore, the VCL framework shall also be applied to a blended learning type Ph.D. summer school for students from TUD and different partner institutions, to support collaborative writing of scientific papers in international and interdisciplinary mixed teams.
The second stepping stone is TUD’s partnership with Stellenbosch U. (South Africa), which is actively being developed from a number of longstanding individual collaborations and projects into a strategic partnership. Both universities’ International Offices are well established and hold strong ties to partners and experts in the field of internationalisation. They are committed to applying digitalisation within the context of internationalisation and building a common virtual platform (i.e. VCHub) for the collection, sharing and further development of teaching and partnership tools and are currently finalising an inter-institutional funding initiative for collaborative teaching projects between the two universities. Within TUD-COIIIL they will combine their established programmes as well as ideas for innovation in the field of intercultural competency development within their universities’ internationalisation@home frameworks as well as for the context of mobility. Representatives from both International Offices will develop common intercultural training curricula that may be used stand-alone, i.e. in preparation or the debriefing of incoming or outgoing students, but may also be integrated into the qualification curriculum of E-tutors in VCL settings, as well as as modules in regular study programmes to improve intercultural competencies and foster supportiveness within the classroom and for international virtual mobility. They will furthermore work with the VCL-projects to develop Learning Analytics for the intercultural curricula and tackle challenges such as bringing together the different academic systems (i.e. calenders, credit systems) and collaborate with ZiLL to develop the individual initiatives into models that will be applicable to other areas, universities and countries.
