Top diabetes researcher becomes Honorary Professor at CRTD / TU Dresden

Rector appoints Matthias Hebrok Honorary Professor in "Cell Biology of the Pancreas" at the Center for Molecular and Cellular Bioengineering (CMCB) of Dresden University

Prof. Matthias Hebrok is the Hurlbut-Johnson Distinguished Professor in Diabetes Research and Associate Professor of Medicine at the Diabetes Center of the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). He is an internationally leading scientist in his field, who will also be working with Dresden in the coming semesters. He will bring in his knowhow focused on cell, molecular and developmental biology tools to decode the mechanisms underlying pancreatic diseases. Together with the Dresden expert network, he aims to develop new methods for the generation of functional insulin-producing beta cells from human stem cell populations and expand the clinical translation program.

“With the appointment of Prof. Matthias Hebrok, TU Dresden is strengthening research in the field of diabetes and stem cells. The long-term objective of this research is the use of hESC/ iPSC-derived beta-like cells also in humans suffering from diabetes. Matthias will work closely with research groups at the CMCB, the Medical Faculty incl. the Paul Langerhans Institute as well as the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics. We welcome Matthias cordially to our network," said Prof. Ezio Bonifacio, Professor at the CRTD.
