Spears used for intracellular electrophysiological signal measurement. A pop-art style arrangement of images showing tiny pulled glass pipettes which are parked on a hill of modeling clay. When filled with a saline solution, under microscopic control and with finely tuned suction, these pipettes can be used to form such a tight seal between their glass tip and a cellular membrane that virtually no ion can leak through the site of contact but must flow through the patch of membrane into - or out of - the pipette. This allows recordings of ion flux through the membrane and inform about opening and closing of transmembrane channels.
