Netzwerk Teilchenwelt presents its Big Bang exhibition

The German Physical Society convenes with a public evening lecture on the future German Center for Astrophysics

Thousands of international researchers will meet to discuss the latest questions in physics during two German Physical Society (DPG) spring meetings on TU Dresden’s campus from March 20 until March 31, 2023. The focus will be on questions surrounding the building blocks of matter, the cosmos and condensed matter. In other words – everything that exists around us. The spectrum ranges from semiconductors and nanotechnology to the Big Bang, from which the universe emerged a good 13.8 billion years ago.

From Saxony to the Universe

On March 23, a free evening lecture invites the public to explore just how vast our universe is. Prof. Christian Stegmann, Director in charge of Astroparticle Physics at the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron DESY and co-initiator of the future German Center for Astrophysics (DZA), will look into the past and the future of the universe and explain how its exploration could hold the key to innovation in technology and digitalization. The lecture is set to begin at 8:00 pm in the Audimax at TU Dresden’s Auditorium Center on Bergstraße. Admission is free.

In the coming weeks, there will also be public lectures on “Risk management – staying informed and relaxed in handling risks” and “Tipping points in the climate system.”

Star dust, strange quarks and antimatter – the Big Bang exhibition

To mark the DPG meetings, Netzwerk Teilchenwelt is presenting its pop-up exhibition on the Big Bang, “Urknall unterwegs,” in Dresden. On March 22, the exhibition will be set up outside the Kulturpalast from 10:00 am until 5:00 pm. On March 20, 21 and 23, it will be available for viewing outside the Auditorium Center of TU Dresden. The interactive exhibition brings the complex world of particle physics closer to enthusiasts of all ages, explaining how and why research is done here and, most importantly, how it affects our everyday lives and society. The main focus is on people working in the field of particle physics. There will also be plenty of fun activities: particle twister, a lego universe, and hadron XL Jenga will help you navigate the interconnections. The Big Bang guides will be on hand to answer your questions. These are doctoral candidates at TU Dresden who are conducting research on particle physics and who would be glad to tell you about their work. Admission is free!

Discussions during the “Urknall unterwegs” exhibition:

• Thursday, March 23, 2:30 pm–3:30 pm: TU Dresden’s Prof. Michael Kobel explains how the exhibition came about and will answer questions on particle physics.
• Thursday, March 23, 5:00 pm–6:00 pm, Christian Stegmann from the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron DESY, provides information on the German Center for Astrophysics, which is being constructed in Lusatia.
