Grand Opening of the Barkhausen Institute in Dresden
On 7th March 2019, the Barkhausen Institute was officially opened at a ceremony attended by Dr. Eva-Maria Stange, Saxon State Minister for Higher Education, Research and the Arts and Prof. Hans Müller-Steinhagen, Rector of TU Dresden.
Digitalisation and the Internet of Things are changing our daily routines and are making a profound impression on our work lives and society as a whole. In order to support the complex technology of the Internet of Things, the Barkhausen Institute aims to integrate hardware, software and communication components. The Barkhausen Institute is a non-profit limited liability company (gGmbH) and a subsidiary of Technische Universität Dresden. By conducting research on secure, real-time-capable systems, the institute will make a significant contribution to closing the gap in the digital value-added chain of the Free State of Saxony. It is to evolve into a research competence centre and will equip Saxony for the Internet of Things and the digital revolution.
Dr. Eva-Maria Stange, Saxon State Minister for Higher Education, Research and the Arts, emphasised: "The Barkhausen Institute is the latest state-financed research institution in the Free State of Saxony and will make a significant contribution to the Internet of Things by developing key components of a European hardware and software platform. The Free State of Saxony has invested in the establishment of the institute because we do not only want to generate new ideas, projects and reliable concepts from this research. But rather, we need to develop new standards that will have a positive impact on the user industries of microelectronics and on the international competitiveness of Dresden and Europe. We also need answers to the questions associated with the expansion of microelectronics into all areas of our lives. The location for the institute is ideal because there are numerous research institutions with excellent trailblazers in the fields of hardware and software, security and connectivity here in Saxony and Dresden."
Prof. Hans Müller-Steinhagen, Rector of Technische Universität Dresden, added: "Just as Heinrich Barkhausen's scientific achievements were ground-breaking in their time, the Barkhausen Institute will also become a pioneer of challenging research on the Internet of Things. The Barkhausen Institute is thus an outstanding cooperation partner for this highly relevant topic. In the future, we hope that it will not only cooperate within Saxony but also nationally and internationally.
Prof. Gerhard Fettweis, Managing Director of the Barkhausen Institute, explained: "The Internet of Things is just around the corner. Furthermore, with 5G mobile communications, a network will be available for the first time that reacts fast enough to control things remotely – called the Tactile Internet. Just as we have become accustomed to the computer as a platform for software or the smartphone as a platform for apps, we need electronic platforms for the end devices in the Tactile Internet and Internet of Things. Because we will rely more heavily on the new internet, these electronic platforms must be reliable and secure. The goal of the Barkhausen Institute is to achieve innovative achievements in this area."
About the Barkhausen Institute
The Barkhausen Institute is financed entirely through resources of the Free State of Saxony. The institute, named after the German physicist Heinrich Barkhausen, is a continuation of TU Dresden's outstanding research in the fields of hardware, software and connectivity. The partnership with DRESDEN-concept and the 5G Lab also provides cooperation opportunities for Dresden to evolve into the centre of the Tactile Internet. Research results will be made available to local industry partners and regularly communicated to the public.
