The Horst Berthold Prize for Outstanding Studies is awarded at the Chair of Machine Tools Development and Adaptive Controls. Its name commemorates the former university lecturer and scholar.

Horst Berthold (1913–1985) was the founder of the Institute for Machine Tools, as it was formerly known, and taught in the Faculty of Mechanical Science and Engineering from 1950 until his retirement in 1978. His leadership at the university (then TH Dresden) laid the academic groundwork for research and teaching in the field of machine tools development. Today’s Institute of Mechatronic Engineering continues to build on this work.

Purpose of the Prize
According to the awarding organization DMW’s statutes for conferring the Horst Berthold Prize for Outstanding Studies, the prize serves to promote excellence in the new generation of machine tool engineering experts.

Selection of the Winners
The Horst Berthold Prize is awarded to students at Technische Universität Dresden who have successfully defended an outstanding academic semester, bachelor’s, master’s or Diplom thesis at the Chair of Machine Tools Development and Adaptive Controls. Lecturers and Research Associates who have advised on a given work are eligible to nominate it for the accolade. The jury is then responsible for evaluating the student theses and selecting the prizewinner(s).

Jury
The selection jury comprises the Holder of the Chair of Machine Tools Development and Adaptive Controls as well as at least two DWM board members.

Prize Money
The Horst Berthold Prize for Outstanding Studies is endowed with 1,000 euros. It can be awarded once per calendar year. The prize may also be shared equally between two students. It is presented to the prizewinner(s) in an award ceremony. In addition to the prize money, the winners also receive an official certificate.

Applications
Student applicants must submit the following documents by September 30 of the current calendar year to enter the competition: a letter of application, an abstract describing the work and a letter of recommendation from the advisor. Work completed after the deadline may only be submitted for the following year. The documents must be submitted to the secretary office of the Chair of Machine Tools Development and Adaptive Controls.
