September 2016: “Stepping Stone - Information Technology” is the title of the current Dresden Transfer Bulletin. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Hubert Lakner, holder of the Chair of Opto-Electronic Components and Systems at TU Dresden and Head of the Fraunhofer Institute of Photonic Micro-Systems Dresden (IPMS) considers sensors and actuators the basis for the Internet of Things and the Industry 4.0. The available expertise in research and development in Saxony are decisive for the future competitiveness of the German industry.

The excellent research today lays the foundation for the economic success of the future: At the excellence cluster “Center for Advancing Electronics Dresden (cfaed)” of TU Dresden, in particular at the Chair of Molecular Functional Materials, scientists meticulously work on wafer-thin carbon materials for high-tech applications in high-performance electronics. And: they are quite successful and are constantly looking for new application possibilities. 

Start-up teams are also on the road to success: At the TU Dresden Chair of Computer Networks young academics developed the novel idea of detecting road damage through smartphone sensor technology. The creators of Cyface have developed a smart navigation for comfortable driving. The advantages of the web-based software platform Detact are presented by the founders of Symate GmbH, a spin-off company of the TUD Institute of Machine Tools and Control Engineering. “Their data incorporates the know-how” the experts tell the potential clients and provide us with an insight into their specialist work. At the TUD Institute of Electronic Packaging Technology as well as at the Centre for Microtechnical Manufacturing   resourceful scientists have developed the idea for optical energy transmission via fibre optical cable and have founded the LUMILOOP GmbH on this basis. Saxony’s Big-Data experts are also writing their success story. At the national centre of competence Dresden/Leipzig experts specifically think about how to meet the challenges when dealing with complex and ever-growing volumes of data in research, industry and the economy.
