February 28, 2023: Rare Disease Day!
As an inclusive university, TU Dresden supports in many ways in everyday university life
February 28 is Rare Disease Day! The goal of this worldwide day of action is to make rare diseases more visible in order to improve medical care as well as general participation.
Even though rare diseases - as the name suggests - are rare, in Germany alone at least 4.5 - 5 million people are affected; worldwide it is estimated that more than 300 million people are affected.
Most of these diseases have hardly been researched - precisely because of the small number of people affected - which is why therapy options are mostly limited to treating symptoms and those affected usually find few support structures in everyday life.
As an inclusive and diversity-oriented university, it is a central concern for the TU Dresden to consider the fair, non-discriminatory and self-determined participation of people with disabilities and chronic diseases in all topics within the university.
In this context, TU Dresden has just adopted its second action plan for the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. This strategy paper summarizes the measures and offers of TU Dresden in the context of inclusion and accessibility.
The advisory and support structure at TU Dresden is wide-ranging. All aspects related to inclusion and accessibility are covered in the TU Dresden's advisory services. In addition, materials for the implementation of accessibility have been acquired at various structural units within the TU Dresden over the course of the past years, which are now to be gradually compiled systematically and made available for loan. With these materials, such as a wheelchair or a Braille display, the study and working conditions at the TU Dresden can be improved.
