Additional block seminars in winter semester 2025/26

The Chair of General Education offers two additional block seminars in February in the winter semester 2025/26:

Block seminar "Pedagogy or Punishment? Restorative justice in educational practice"

Content: The restorative justice approach is an alternative way of looking at and dealing with conflicts. The focus is on building and maintaining sustainable, positive relationships and improving the

school and learning climate as an alternative to punitive behavior. Originating from various indigenous communities and already widespread internationally, the approach is also becoming increasingly popular in Germany.

The seminar will introduce the philosophy of the restorative justice approach and shed light on related concepts such as dialog, community and punishment. In addition, the question of what possibilities and challenges restorative justice has for educational practice will be explored.

Block seminar "Enlightenment and Destructiveness"

Content: Based on Caroline Amlinger and Oliver Nachtwey's analysis of contemporary destructiveness in liberal democracies, in this block seminar we will first examine the historical and programmatic foundations of democratic liberalism using educational theory texts by Immanuel Kant and Wilhelm von Humboldt. Following on from this, with reference to Theodor W. Adorno as well as artistic and contemporary historical objects, we will discuss the extent to which education and training were factors in the National Socialist break with civilization after the Weimar Republic. Finally, we will discuss the significance of these key concepts for understanding and dealing with the social crisis today.
