Children learn mathematics in and through representations

Prof. Elke Söbbeke from the University of Wuppertal is our guest at the mathematics didactics colloquium. All interested students, lecturers and teachers are cordially invited. The event will be offered exclusively digitally.

What is the lecture about?

Mathematical concepts are not things that actually exist in the real world and can be seen and touched. In order to give learners access to mathematics, representations are used in the classroom. The lecture will explore the question of how primary school children access mathematics in and through representations, materials and visual aids. Children's interpretations will be examined on the basis of various practical examples. It is reconstructed which sometimes surprising orienting references influence the interpretations and how this can affect conceptual understanding. Finally, the conditions that can be created to stimulate mathematical reflection processes are discussed.
