Registration and Procedure
If you are interested in writing a state examination thesis on the aspects mentioned above, please follow these steps:
0. Preparation
Before contacting us, you should verify whether your interests align with the subject areas mentioned above and only then submit an inquiry. To do this, review the topics and content of the seminars you have attended and those currently offered, as well as the publications by the Chair’s faculty. Consider which of your own interests might align with these topics and use that to develop topic proposals.
1. Initial Contact and Introductory Meeting
Send your initial topic proposals via email to a potential advisor from the Chair’s team. This will be followed by an initial meeting to narrow down the focus and establish the framework conditions. This inquiry should be made no earlier than one semester and no later than three months before registration and the start of writing your state examination thesis.
2. Preparation and Submission of an Exposé
Based on the initial consultation, you will develop your topic in an exposé of at least five pages. This should include at least one research question, a theoretical framework, and the planned methodological approach for addressing the research question. The exposé also includes a rough outline and the key reference literature, which are not counted toward the five-page limit. When preparing your abstract, please follow the guidelines for academic writing.
Send your proposal by January 15 (LASUB winterexam period ) or July 15 (LASUB summerexam period ) as a single PDF document via email to your advisor. (Name the document as follows: YEAR_EXAM-PERIOD_LAST-NAME_FIRST-NAME.pdf [e.g.,27_Summer_Muster_Kim.pdf])
3. Decision on Acceptance of the Thesis
Based on the exposé, a decision will be made as to whether the topic can be assigned by the Chair. You will receive feedback on this no later than one week before the start of the registration period.
4. Registering Your Thesis with LASUB
After receiving confirmation that the topic has been approved, prepare the registration form and submit it to your contact person for a digital signature by the deadline. You must independently contact a second reviewer. You will forward the registration form to this person after it has been signed by the first reviewer.
5. Independent Work on Your Research Question
Based on your proposal, you will write your research paper independently. You may schedule office hours or consultations with your advisor to discuss progress and address specific questions.
Possible interim milestones may include:
- Literature review and development of the theoretical framework; deriving the research interest or research question from the current state of research
- For empirical studies: development of the research design and data collection instruments
- For empirical studies: data collection and interpretation
6. Submission of the Thesis
Submit your thesis to LASUB and to your advisors. Discuss the submission format (printed or electronic) with your advisors.
