Riding the Data Train to the School of the Future — University School at Dresden Science Night
At the 23rd Dresden Science Night, the University School Research Unit (ForUS) welcomed numerous visitors to the project space “Dresden University School—Learning and Research at a School of the Future.” Together with students, parents, and teachers from the Dresden University School, the researchers and student assistants answered guests’ questions and discussed their ideas on how the school should prepare students for life and the future.

The work with the "date treasure" on successful learning—generated over the course of the 15-year Dresden University School pilot program—was vividly illustrated using a “data train”: The data points—collected, for example, through standardized tests (Demat, ELFE, HSP)—traveled as peas, lentils, and beans to be evaluated and further processed, for instance in publications. The experiences and insights described here are already being incorporated into teacher training at TU Dresden and into transfer projects.
Visitors were able to get a glimpse into everyday school life through various films produced since the school’s founding in 2019. The TUD video “At Work with … Learning Facilitator Pia Heyne” provides a particularly impressive demonstration of how project-based learning is implemented.
For the school community and the University School Research Unit at TU Dresden (ForUS), participating in Dresden Science Night is a successful complement to the Open House, which takes place regularly at the school in January.

About the Dresden University School

Dresden University School is a joint project of the state capital of Dresden and the TUD Dresden University of Technology. It is a public and free community school run by the city, where innovative forms of teaching and learning are tested under academic supervision. In addition, it is a training school for future teachers and, in the future, a further education school for teachers. The ForUS - University School Research Unit at TU Dresden is providing scientific support for the school trial.
