Digital lecture: Spuren der Armut. Franziskus von Assisi und seine Bewegung
On 16.02.2023 at 7pm, FOVOG Director Mirko Breitenstein will give a digital lecture as part of the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister programme entitled "Spuren der Armut. Franziskus von Assisi und seine Bewegung" (Traces of Poverty. Francis of Assisi and his movement). The lecture will be held in German.
Francis of Assisi is undoubtedly one of the most important saints of Christianity. As the son of wealthy parents, he left everything material behind him and became a prophet of complete poverty. Initially derided as an outsider, he was nevertheless quickly joined by women and men who, following his example, wanted to lead a life of poverty and penance, but also in direct discipleship of Christ. In just a few years, one of the largest religious and social movements of the time was born. Unlike the real poor of their time, those who followed Francis in voluntary poverty left behind a wealth of traces that can hardly be surveyed: material as well as architectural or artistic works, ideal as well as new forms of understanding and shaping the world. The lecture will present the life of Francis as it found contemporary expression in numerous texts and images. The traces of Franciscan poverty show how the explosive power of the Franciscan model could be captured quickly and not least artistically.
