DR. MARKO JERKOVIĆ
Dr. Marko Jerković works as an associate professor at the University of Zagreb, where he teaches courses on medieval culture and religion. His research interests include the institutional history of Church and religious orders; medieval centres of power; collective identities; ecclesiastical government; concepts of authority and discipline in religious orders; processes of normative formation of religious orders.
He published the monograph book Zagrebački kanonici u 14. stoljeću – institucionalna i društvena povijest katedralne zajednice [Canons of the Zagreb Chapter in the 14th Century: Institutional and Social History of the Cathedral Community] (2018), and some 30 papers about the history of Church and religious orders, as well as eight editorial books, the most recent of them being: The Fourth Lateran Council: An Event that transformed Europe (2019), Institutional Aspects of Church and Social History (2021), and Biography, Hagiography, Charisma: Functionalization of Text in Croatian and European Religious Communities (2023). He delivered the papers at some 40 conferences and workshops, and participated in the organisation of 2o conferences or workshops.
From 2019 he is the associated scientist at the FOVOG-Dresden. He is a member of the “Committee of Ecclesiastical History of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Regional Committee of Pécs”; of the “Episcopus – Society for the Study of Bishops and Secular Clergy in the Middle Ages” and of the “Tkalčić: Society for the study of Zagreb Archdiocese history”. He is the general editor of the Bibliotheca Religious Entrepreneurs of the University of Zagreb which publishes the contributions to the vita religiosa. He participated in various exchange programs and teaching mobility (ERASMUS, CEEPUS).
Dr. Jerković directed or participated in various scientific projects, hosted by the University of Zagreb, Catholic University of Zagreb, University of Dresden, and University of Pécs. He is currently directing the project “Religious Entrepreneurs: Cultural Imprints of Religious Communities in Croatia and Europe”, and co-directing the bilateral project “Saints and Shaping of Religious Identities” hosted by the FOVOG, Dresden and University of Zagreb – Faculty of Croatian Studies (DAAD–Croatian Ministry of Science).
In 2019 he was the Junior research fellow of the Technical University of Dresden. Within the framework of this scholarship he was conducting the project “Authority and Consent in Religious Orders: Re-defining the Monastic Community in the 12th and 13th Century”, at the FOVOG-Dresden. The project dealt with the transformation of the authority-concepts and the evolution of the governance system based on the consensually promulgated laws.
He is currently dealing with the forms and functions of disciplinary authority. By connecting the theory of social control and close reading of the sources, the research aims at understanding the notions of power and institutional durability within the religious orders.

Current project

From 02/2019 at the FOVOG: “Norm, Authority, Consent: Re-defining the Religious Community in the 12^th and 13^th Century”

Project description: The project deals with the transformation of the authority-concepts and the evolution of the governance system based on the consensually promulgated laws in the 12^th-13^th century religious orders. The aim is to grasp institutional formation and functionality of the orders, within the paradigm-change from traditional monarchical system to the government-system of the shared responsibility. The focus is on the Cistercians and Dominicans, however it concerns other orders, namely Premonstratensians and Cluniacs, as well. The project studies how the idea of the “consensual community” was born and the authority of corporate government perpetuated by following the three-layer research scheme: 1. invention of the consent-based community, especially the question how orders affirmed the authority of “we” in the making (and changing) the law; 2. institutionalization (the formalization of the novelty) and mediality (communication system); 3. implications – how the innovations, especially the changeability of law, affected the understanding of the religious community. The research tends to define more strictly the character of the “consensualism” in different religious communities. The issue of how were consent-based-laws promulgated relates to the very essence of the vita regularis, namely the normative formation of the communities, i.e. the creation of the ius particulare that was intended to preserve the propositum of each of the order. However, the consensual decision-making as the phenomenon integrated in the scolae seruitii could not function without the proper legitimation and the institutional mechanisms through which the law would be promoted and accepted. Thus, the project tends to contribute to the understanding of the “communal will” and methods of conceptualizing transcendental legitimation. Finally, it relates to the issue of how an individual functioned in the “consensual community”, since the concepts of obedience started to exist in the liminal space between traditional monastic spirituality, governing novelties, and individual conscience.
