Book discussion with James Retallack, author of “Red Saxony. Election battles and the Specter of Democracy in Germany, 1860-1918 ”

When, 150 years after the founding of the empire in 1871, there is again a struggle for the historical signature of the German empire in history, the view of Saxony should not be missing. Known and notorious at the same time as the “Red Kingdom” and the “Model Country of Reaction”, Saxony was shaped by a fundamental politicization and polarization and, significantly, had to redesign its electoral law three times in a short time. What outcomes this had for the political culture of Saxony and what continuities arose from it well into the 20th and even the 21st century, we want to discuss with the renowned Canadian historian James Retallack, who has been researching the history of Saxony under the Empire for many years and his Has published findings in the extensive monograph "Red Saxony" (Oxford University Press).

The event is a cooperation between the Chairs for Modern and Contemporary History and Saxon State History at the TU Dresden and the Saxon State Center for Political Education.
