Gisela Hürlimann has held the Chair of History of Technology and Economy at the Institute of History at TU Dresden since September 1, 2021.
With a doctorate in the history of transport and innovation, a postdoctoral thesis on the history of taxation and currently working on a project on the flow of animal raw materials, Gisela Hürlimann takes a broad thematic approach that integrates the history of technology and science, economic and business history, cultural history and human-animal studies and is also interested in the history of technical universities.
Gisela Hürlimann grew up in Switzerland, studied in Zurich and Barcelona and taught at the Universities of Zurich, Basel, Fribourg (Switzerland), Bern and ETH Zurich between 2001 and 2021. At ETH Zurich, she was a senior assistant to the Chair of History of Technology until 2020.
Research stays have taken her to the German Historical Institute in Washington D.C., the Graduate School of Economics at Kyoto University and the Department for Sociology at UC San Diego.
In Germany, she began her academic career as a substitute professor in the history of technology at TU Berlin in 2017 and continued at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in 2019/20.
Prior to her appointment to the Chair of History of Technology and Economy, she represented the history of technology and science of technology at TU Dresden from April to August 2021.
