Research at the Chair
Research at the professorship addresses the systematic core areas of the discipline: epistemology, philosophy of language, metaphysics, logic, and philosophy of mind. In recent years one focus has been social epistemology — epistemic authority and expertise, epistemic networks and belief formation in digital spaces, and epistemic injustice together with the conditions for remedying it. Further work concerns the relationship between knowledge and decision, epistemic values, and the question of when AI systems can warrant trust.
What characterises this work is the combination of conceptual analysis with practical bearing: questions in epistemology are pursued not only for their own sake, but also where they become pressing — in medicine, in the digital public sphere, and in dealings with scientific expertise. The professorship accordingly collaborates regularly with other disciplines.
Research is largely externally funded, including by the German Research Foundation, the Volkswagen Foundation, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, and the Free State of Saxony.
