International Conference on Training Data in Patent and Copyright Law at TU Dresden
On June 22, 2026, the TUD Dresden University of Technology, Charles University in Prague, and Jagiellonian University in Kraków hosted the international conference “Training Data in Patent and Copyright Law.” The event focused on current copyright and patent law issues surrounding the training of artificial intelligence.
Conference presentations addressed German case law on AI training and text and data mining (Prof. Dr. Anne Lauber-Rönsberg, LL.M., TU Dresden), comparative legal perspectives on AI training using copyright-protected works in Europe and Asia (JUDr. et Mgr. Petra Žikovská, PhD, Charles University in Prague), as well as the copyright challenges posed by open-source software in the context of AI training (Dr. Bohdan Widła, Jagiellonian University in Kraków).
Another highlight was the presentation by Assistant Professor Dr. Katharina Kaesling, LL.M. (TU Dresden) on the topic “Patent Protection of Synthetic Training Data.” She examined the conditions under which structured—and, in particular, synthetic—training data can be protected by patent law.
The conference provided an international platform for interdisciplinary exchange on the future shape of patent and copyright law in the age of artificial intelligence and strengthened collaboration among the participating research institutions.
