The core research areas of the Chair include general international law, United Nations law, international humanitarian law and international human rights law. The UNESCO Chair in International Relations is dedicated to international cultural property law, cultural heritage and cultural diversity, and the nexus of peace and cultural heritage/diversity.
The central concern of the UNESCO Chair in International Relations is research on the implementation of UNESCO conventions and other normative instruments, particularly in the fields of cultural heritage and diversity of cultural expressions. In addition, the connection between cultural heritage/cultural diversity and peace ("nexus to peace") is an important subject of research (see Article 2, Agreement concerning the Establishment of a UNESCO Chair in International Relations, at the Technical University of Dresden, Germany, March 25, 2009).
The core element of the UNESCO Chair's research is the understanding of the protection of cultural property under international law as a cross-cutting issue, also and especially in the United Nations. The aim is to contribute to raising awareness of the value of cultural treasures, to exploit the resulting opportunities and to network academics, practitioners and civil society stakeholders in order to provide a platform for cross-thematic exchange.
