Panel Discussion – United Nations' Green Peacekeeping: Energy Revolution amidst Safeguarding Global Peace and Security
At the beginning of April 2025, the United Nations University will host its Dresden Nexus Conference (DNC 25). This will once again place Dresden at the center of international cooperation and forward-thinking discussions. Under the title “The Future of Resources – Resources for the Future”, the international conference will take place from April 8 to 10, 2025, in Dresden, focusing on the future of resource management from various perspectives. DNC 25 will be part of the 50th anniversary celebrations of the United Nations University, with UNU Rector and UN Under-Secretary-General Prof. Tshilidzi Marwala as one of the distinguished guests.
2025 is also a special year for Dresden: It marks 80 years of peace since World War II, 35 years as the capital of Saxony in reunified Germany, and 15 years of the DRESDEN-concept, a research alliance of 40 prominent institutions in the region. Dresden is therefore the perfect place to once again welcome the world.
The Center for International Studies at TU Dresden (ZIS) is not only involved in organizing this flagship event as part of the Scientific Committee of DNC 25 but is also hosting its own panel within the overarching theme “Resource Nexus, Environmental Risk, and Global Crises”. The panel, titled “United Nations' Green Peacekeeping: Energy Revolution Amidst Safeguarding Global Peace and Security”, will be a special session of DNC 2025 on April 8, 2025:
The global climate crisis is one of the greatest challenges of our time. Countries in the Global South are particularly affected, not only suffering from the consequences of climate change but also often experiencing social unrest and conflict. The United Nations' efforts to both mitigate the effects of the climate crisis and promote peace and security were recently reaffirmed in the final document of the Summit of the Future. A key part of these efforts is integrating renewable energy into peacekeeping missions to make them more sustainable and effective. The focus is on reducing the UN Secretariat’s carbon footprint and enhancing the security and resilience of peace operations. However, this approach can also contribute to improving the socio-economic development of the host countries. Together, we aim to discuss these developments and the opportunities and challenges they entail.
All interested parties are warmly invited to participate. Further information about the panel discussion and the invited guests can be found here.
