Online Workshop SEM
An introduction to structural equation modeling and its applications for examining causal mechanisms
30.06.2025 13:30 - 16:30
This workshop introduces in the increasingly popular methodology of structural equation modeling (SEM) in the social sciences and discusses applications of SEM in the study of causal mechanisms. The first part of the workshop presents the general framework of SEM and focuses on several types of structural equation models that are very often used in social science applications – path analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, structural regression analysis, and longitudinal modeling. The second part commences with a brief introduction to SEM applications for studying causality. A general class of cross-lagged structural regression models are then discussed. The approach is illustrated on empirical data. Throughout the workshop, the highly popular and widely circulated latent variable modeling program Mplus is utilized on multiple occasions. The workshop is geared toward faculty in the social sciences as well as graduate students in the social and behavioral disciplines.
