Online Workshop SEM
An introduction to structural equation modeling and its applications to the study of causal mechanisms
!NEW: 07.07.2025 13:30 - 16:30
This workshop introduces the increasingly popular methodology of structural equation modeling (SEM) in the social sciences and discusses applications of SEM in the study of causal mechanisms. The first part of the workshop introduces the general framework of SEM and focuses on different types of structural equation models that are very commonly used in social science applications - path analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, structural regression analysis, and longitudinal modeling. The second part begins with a brief introduction to SEM applications for the study of causality. Subsequently, a general class of cross-lagged structural regression models is discussed. The approach will be illustrated using empirical data. Throughout the workshop, the very popular and widely used latent variable modeling program Mplus will be used several times. The workshop is aimed at lecturers in the social sciences as well as doctoral students in the social and behavioral sciences.
