SCADS.AI Legal Challenges and Solutions in Big Data Technologies: Privacy by Design
The national competence center for Big Data, ScaDS Dresden/Leipzig, is becoming a german center for Artificial Intelligence (AI) as part of the AI-strategy of the federal government. Therefore, it is now called ScaDS.AI (Center for Scalable Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence) Dresden/Leipzig. The project is funded by the Federal Ministry for Education and Research and the Freestate of Saxony is supporting it by supporting several new professorships focused on AI in both Dresden and Leipzig. The center's research is focused on fundamental questions of AI methods in order to close the gab between the efficient use of mass data, cutting-edge methods of AI and the administration of knowledge. Next to new methods of machine learning and AI, the research focuses on trustworthy AI, privacy protection, transparency, protection of minority rights and explainability of AI.
The project "Legal Challenges and Solutions in Big Data Technologies: Privacy by Design" led by Prof. Müller-Mall is specifically looking at the legal and political aspects of Big Data and AI technologies. Therefore, the application of the privacy by design-approach to Big Data will be researched in light of the recently enforced General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Additionally, the tensions between the logic and trajectories of Big Data and privacy requirements will be explored in order to set a foundation for innovative research that complies with data protection requirements nontheless.
