About us
Welcome to the Chair of English Linguistics! Our research and teaching are dedicated to the English language in all its diversity – its history and varieties.
What we do
At the Chair of English Linguistics, we look into the various forms and functions of the English language in the past and present. The courses offered at our department are part of the full selection of the faculty’s Bachelor, Master and Staatsexamen (German government licensing examination, equivalent to a Master's degree) programmes. Students may choose from a wide range of courses to investigate specific aspects of the general structure of the English language (e. g. semantics, syntax), examine its historical stages or study its dynamics as a world language. Apart from that, the uses and functions of English in daily life (e. g. pragmatics) are another interesting subject to look into. In addition to teaching and lecturing in their traditional senses, we are committed to continuously developing and providing interactive e-Learning services.
The research conducted at the chair tackles language and language phenomena from a perspective that also incorporates both the speakers and the sociocultural environment. For details on the specific research areas and projects, please follow this link.
