Courses offered in the linguistics modules
(1) Module ‘Basics of Linguistics’
Introductory course (lecture + tutorial)
In the ‘Basics of Linguistics’ module, an introductory course in English linguistics with an associated tutorial is offered every semester.
From summer semester 2014, the synchronous introductory course will be offered regularly in the summer semester and the diachronic introductory course regularly in the winter semester. The diachronic introductory course focuses on the basics of English linguistics using examples from the history of the English language. This gives you an overview of the sub-areas and methods of English linguistics as well as the epochs of English language history.
The synchronous introductory course deals with the sub-areas and methods of English linguistics using examples from contemporary English. Historical epochs of English are not discussed here.
In order to participate in the linguistic proseminars in the ‘Survey of Linguistics/...’ module, you must pass an EC (you can choose freely between diachronic and synchronic EC). Even historically orientated advanced seminars do not necessarily require participation in the diachronic EC.
Exercises
In the ‘Basics of Linguistics’ module, two different exercises from the following list are offered per semester, whereby the first two are more synchronous, while the last two are diachronic (historical):
Ü ‘English around the World’
Ü ‘Coping with (English) Linguistics’
Ü ‘Coping with Early English Texts’
Ü ‘Medieval England’
The exercises serve to acquire basic skills in dealing with linguistic material such as secondary literature, corpora or texts from older language levels of English. No prior knowledge from the EC is required to attend a tutorial. The exercises can be taken parallel to the EC or in the semester before or after attending the EC.
(2) ‘Survey of Linguistics/...’ module
In the ‘Survey of Linguistics’ module, various proseminars are offered each semester, each of which introduces a sub-area of linguistics or provides an overview of aspects of linguistics. The prerequisite for participation in the proseminars is knowledge of the contents of the basic linguistics module.
(3) ‘Topics of Linguistics’ module
In the ‘Topics of Linguistics’ module, various seminars are offered each semester, each of which relates to specific linguistic issues and builds on the knowledge gained in the basic linguistics module and the survey module.
(4) Lectures
Participation in lectures on English linguistics does not require any prior knowledge.
