Drew Hayden Taylor (b. 1962) is an award-winning Indigenous playwright, novelist, filmmaker, and journalist from Canada. He was born in the Curve Lake First Nation, where he still lives today. His career has included everything from performing stand-up comedy at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., to serving as the artistic director of Canada’s first Indigenous theatre company, Native Earth Performing Arts. Drew Hayden Taylor is the author of 36 books to date. In Germany, he is best known to a wider audience for his documentary Searching for Winnetou (2018). COLD is the first of his novels to be translated into German.
In Cold (2024), Drew Hayden Taylor relocates traditional Indigenous stories to the modern streets of Toronto, weaving together elements of entertainment, crime, thriller, and horror into a fast-paced narrative with relatable characters. Along the way, he addresses themes such as displacement and trauma while offering a satirical critique of contemporary Indigenous literature.
It all begins with a plane crash:
The only survivors—the pilot and an ambitious journalist—cling to the hope of rescue in the frozen wilderness of Ontario...
Meanwhile, Elmore Trent, a professor of Indigenous Literature and Culture at the University of Toronto, is desperately trying to save his marriage after his wife leaves him over an affair with his attractive student assistant. And Paul North, a hockey player in the IHL currently in Toronto for the finals of the Indigenous Hockey League, finds himself facing the unglamorous end of his athletic career...
It soon becomes clear that someone—or something—connects these seemingly isolated characters... something that is hunting them all...
