The Communication Design Department in the summer semester of 2024 cordially invites you to three evening events. Their focus will be on lectures and discussions exploring the transformative potential of design. The event series will delve into the possibilities of post- and transdisciplinary approaches, diversification of the design field, and updating professional ethics. We have invited contributors from the areas of journalism, design criticism, speculative design, design history, and design theory, and are delighted to welcome Nina Sieverding, Matthias Görlich, Johanna Mehl, Silvio Lorusso, Noam Youngrak Son, and Claudia Doms to Mainz as our guests.
A New Dark Age or a Brighter Future? — What Design Can, Can’t, or Should Do
May 27, 2024 Entry: 18:30 Start: 19:00
How does design shape our collective imagination of the future? Why do we think that design is able to solve our future problems? What kind of problems does design solve? How does design reflect contemporary notions of what is considered “normal” or “accepted”? What is the role of design in materializing more equitable futures? Can we design our way out of this? We will discuss these and other questions with Johanna Mehl and Silvio Lorusso.
