After a six-month hiatus, the Centre for East Asian Studies (OAZ) at TU Dresden resumed operations on June 15, 2026. We are currently working on reviving the OAZ's diverse range of seminars.
The Area Studies on East Asia, offered as a concurrent study program until the end of 2025, is currently undergoing conceptual refinement. The goal is to integrate the various seminars that made up the Area Studies in the past more closely with the elective and supplementary modules of various degree programs at TU Dresden. New courses are planned for the summer semester of 2027 at the earliest. Details regarding the concrete structure and credit transfer options will be announced once internal consultations are complete.

Language courses in Chinese and Japanese from levels A1 to A2.2 (UNIcert® Primary) and B1.1 to B1.2 (UNIcert® I) will continue to run in cooperation with TU Dresden Institute of Advanced Studies GmbH (TUDIAS). Academic responsibility for the language instruction rests with the Teaching Centre for Languages and Regional Studies (LSK), while the OAZ particularly supports the regional and intercultural profiling of these courses. Some changes the field of Chinese as a Foreign Language will take effect starting in the Winter Semester 26/27:
Starting with the newly launched A1 courses, Standard Mandarin will be taught for the first time this winter semester in both its mainland and Taiwanese varieties. In learning the Chinese script, students will have the option to choose between the simplified characters used in the PRC and the traditional characters used in Taiwan and Hong Kong. Through this approach, we aim to accommodate the diversity of the Sinophone world in our language instruction and enable students to prepare specifically for study abroad programs in either the PRC or Taiwan.
In addition, the OAZ serves as a point of contact for questions regarding China and Taiwan competence for all faculties and academic institutions at TU Dresden. As a founding member of the Association of China Centers at German Universities (VCdH), we are deeply embedded in regional and national networks. We draw upon a broad spectrum of expertise in academic cooperation with both the PR China and Taiwan, and are happy to facilitate internal referrals for experts to conduct seminars and training sessions on China competence.
