Dr. Laura Linzmeier: Maritime French? On the Role of Western French Sailors and Merchants in the Development of North American French
Poster for the lecture “Français maritime? On the role of western French sailors and traders in the development of North American French” by Dr. Laura Linzmeier (Regensburg) on December 15, 2025, at the SLK Faculty of the Technical University of Dresden.
Sailors and merchants have extensive networks on land and at sea. It is therefore hardly surprising that the linguistic influence of these communities of practice extends beyond maritime and trade-related contexts.
The lecture examined this with regard to maritime stakeholders from western France and their role in the development of North American French.
Dr. Laura Linzmeier spoke as part of the seminar “Langue et société au Québec” by PD Dr. Franz Meier.
Guests were warmly welcomed.
