Founded in 1994, the Institute of Romance Studies combines the sub-fields of French and Italian Studies (Hispanic Studies in EuroS)
They are currently represented in research and teaching by the following professorships:

- Romance Linguistics (French/Spanish)
- Romance Linguistics (French/Italian)
- Didactics of the Romance languages
The Institute is characterised by a focus on French and Italian Studies in the disciplines of linguistics, literature and cultural studies as well as didactics, and finally a qualified practical language training, which is supplemented by numerous programmes abroad (bilateral study programmes, ERASMUS, internships abroad, etc.) and the study programme ‘Regional Studies Latin America’ (ReLa).
In addition, the numerous readings, colloquia, excursions, guest lectures, film presentations and exhibitions offered in cooperation with domestic and foreign institutions enable students to discuss current research issues in Romance Studies and to develop an understanding of interdisciplinary phenomena.
