Lecture Sybila Guéneau June 27, 2022
Poster for the lecture “The Suburbs in Neo-Polar Fiction” by Sybila Guéneau (EHESS, Paris) on June 27, 2022, at the SLK Faculty of TU Dresden.
Crime stories have become an integral part of everyday entertainment. Brutal violent crimes, sullen investigators with surprising insights, a dark atmosphere: these suspense-building elements attract a large audience in film and literature. But crime fiction can also be a medium for social criticism. In her lecture, Sybila Guéneau (EHESS) demonstrated how, beginning in the 1960s, the “néo-polar” genre not only exposed the problems in the suburbs of Paris but also established itself as a political instrument of social criticism. Her analysis was based on excerpts from works by authors such as Jean-Patrick Manchette, Jean Vautrin, and Hervé Prudon.
Event held in French.
She spoke as part of the seminar “Banlieue en crise? Figurations médiales de la périphérie urbaine” by Dr. Matthias Kern.
