- This seminar is concerned with the ways smell functions as a cultural phenomenon. How we perceive, categorise, and respond to odours is deeply embedded in social practices, political discourses, and systems of knowledge. Smell is not simply a biological sensation but a site where power structures and cultural hierarchies are produced and reproduced. Throughout history, olfactory experience has been systematically gendered, raced, and classed. European cultures, for example, constructed specific olfactory stereotypes and attributed them to racialised groups as a means of establishing social hierarchies. Similarly, while men were allowed to smell sweaty, women who did not smell ‘sweet’ were considered to betray ideals of femininity. Smell also played a role in maintaining class boundaries: while the working class was labelled malodorous, the upper-class body was deodorised in cultural and political discourses. In this seminar, we will ask, for instance: In what ways do cultural productions challenge or reproduce dominant olfactory regimes? How might scent function as a mode of resistance, intimacy, or exclusion? What kinds of bodies or spaces are made to carry odour, and which ones are deodorised?

- 13 October – 22 December: regular sessions (Mondays, 13:00-14:30)
31 January and 1 February (10:00-16:00): Student Conference
In 1924, the writer and philosopher Aldous Huxley opens an article in the British Vogue with the following words: “La Rochefoucauld […] remarked of love: that there are people who would never have been in love if they had never heard love talked about. […] We may extend the scope of the maxim and say that even the people capable of spontaneously falling in love would not fall in love in the peculiar ways they do if they had never heard talk, or never read, of these particular ways of loving. For the fact is that there are fashions in love; fashions that last a little longer, it is true, than the modes in dress, but quite as tyrannous as these.” This theory-heavy seminar serves as an introduction to the interdisciplinary field of critical love studies. Even though, as Laurent Berlant phrases is, “[t]here is nothing more alienating than having your pleasures disputed by someone with a theory”, this seminar is going to explore love in its constructedness. We are going to consider, for instance, the material practices and embodied experiences of love in their interrelation with power and domination; the cultural contingency of the relation between sexuality and romance, or passion and love; consumer capitalism and the impact of film, television and literature on the ways in which we make sense of love and romance. Students will then analyse representations of their choice within British Cultural Studies through the prism of the theoretical frameworks discussed in class. The course culminates in a student conference where these papers are presented and discussed. - Literatur

- This seminar is designed for third year BA students as well as for LikWa and “Staatsexamen” students.
Whether we take a look at Desdemona, Lady Macbeth or Tamora, Queen of the Goths, Shakespeare’s tragedies abound with powerful women who take their fate in their own hands. Additionally, we have female characters such as Ophelia, Emilia, Bianca or Lavinia, who adopt different strategies to survive —more or less—in a ‘men’s world.’ In this seminar, we will focus on the link between gender and power in four of Shakespeare’s most famous tragedies to show that even more than 400 years after his death, these plays are just as relevant as ever, if not more so. We also include film versions to get a better understanding of how these plays function, not just as written text but when actually performed on stage. This material will not only be analyzed from a gender studies perspective, but also with regard to the specific motifs and themes relevant to each text/film: i.e. the supernatural, witchcraft, the subversion of the nature/culture divide and the transgression of binary oppositions in Macbeth; the question of identity and the literary tradition of revenge and madness in Hamlet and in Titus Andronicus; and the notions of power, colonialism and sadism in Othello. Moreover, this seminar will include a comprehensive introductory overview of Shakespeare’s tragedies and their historical background as well as an introduction to the theory of tragedy.
NOTE: This seminar is designed as a compact seminar. The first sessions will take place in week one and three, but the seminar itself will take place on a weekend (Saturday and Sunday) in late January 2026. - Literatur

Wochentag Uhrzeit Ort Durchführung Donnerstag 3. Doppelstunde W48/0004/U In Präsenz - Beschreibung
- This seminar is designed for third year BA students as well as for LikWa and “Staatsexamen” students.
This seminar is intended for students who are interested in reading fascinating novels and short stories, in bridging the gulf between literary and cultural studies and in learning about Postcolonial and South Asian Studies. “Sri Lanka, the Civil War and its Aftermath” does not only serve as a critical introduction to Sri Lankan literature and culture and to the major tenets of postcolonial studies; it also enables students to put this knowledge into practice and discuss their findings in joint sessions with colleagues and students from Sri Lanka. At the centre of this seminar are three different literary genres – a novel, a novella and a collection of short stories –, all of which demonstrate literature’s ability to deal with the uncanny remnants of the past, to live through conditions of war, diaspora and migration, but also to reconcile and create a new (national) community.
The first novel we read is Nayomi Munaweera’s Island of a Thousand Mirrors, a book that won the 2013 Commonwealth Book Prize for the Asian Region and brilliantly contrasts the experience of emigration to the US with life as a female Tamil Tiger and suicide bomber during the Sri Lankan Civil War. It “completely sweeps the reader away into a world known little to outsiders” and gives “a glimpse into the world of forbidden love, prejudice, and arranged marriages as a civil war begins to simmer in the background” (A. Gomenyuk). Our second text, Anuk Arudpragasam's novella The Story of a Brief Marriage, also focuses on the civil war, but takes place over the course of a single day at a displaced persons’ camp and can be read as ‘a meditation on the fundamental elements of human existence (…) that give us direction and purpose, even as the world around us collapses’. In comparison to this, Romesh Gunesekera’s short story collection Noontide Toll, shows Sri Lanka in a much more positive light; a Sri Lanka in which the reader follows the adventures of ‘"Vasantha the van man" as he transports tourists, soldiers, entrepreneurs, aid workers and exiles to the ravaged north and the renewed south’, thus reconnecting and re-thinking a country the name of which signifies no less than ’Resplendent‘ or ’Shining/Brilliant Island’.
A lecture series (Vorlesung) on Postcolonial Studies (Wednesday, 3.DS; 11.10-12.40) and a series of Exchange Sessions (Wednesday, 6. DS; 16.40-18.10) with Sri Lankan and international students accompany this seminar. However, attendance in the Vorlesung or in the Exchange Sessions is not mandatory. - Literatur

Wochentag Uhrzeit Ort Durchführung Dienstag 5. Doppelstunde HSZ/105/U In Präsenz - Beschreibung
- Horror film has long served as a mirror of cultural anxieties, staging collective fears in forms that are at once exaggerated and symbolic. At any given time, the cinematic construction of monsters—whether ghosts, zombies, mutants, vampires, cannibals, or psychopaths—reveals much about hegemonic norms, including what is considered desirable, what is repressed, and who or what is cast as Other. American horror film, in particular, is notorious for its reliance on racial and gendered stereotypes. More often than not, its gaze has been a White gaze, evident in portrayals of Black masculinity as an animalistic threat, depictions of Voodoo in early zombie films, and the disturbingly frequent trope that “the Black guy dies first.”
At the same time, horror has provided a space for social critique, resistance, and the articulation of nonhegemonic forms of subjectivity and agency. This course takes the contemporary renaissance of Black Horror Cinema, or Black Neo-Horror—exemplified by films such as Jordan Peele’s celebrated allegory of liberal racism Get Out (2017), Nia DaCosta’s Candyman (2021), or Ryan Coogler’s Sinners (2025)—as an occasion to explore the long tradition of Black filmmakers, performers, and audiences mobilizing the horror genre to confront racial oppression, reckon with collective trauma, imagine social change, center positive portrayals of Blackness, or just have fun. We will consider “Black horror” in its multiple registers: the historical reality of Black life in America as itself a form of horror; films made by Black filmmakers who use the genre for critique or reinvention; works featuring Black actors and characters; and the significance of audience and reception—how Black viewers have interpreted, resisted, or reclaimed horror.
Through screenings of Night of the Living Dead (1968), Ganja and Hess (1973), Tales from the Hood (1995), Candyman (1992 and 2021) and Get Out (2017), the course will pair key examples of Black Horror Cinema with foundational texts in Black Studies, African American history, and Film Theory.
All films will be screened at selected cinemas in Dresden outside the regular course slot (friends invited).
Please note: Given this course's theme in relation to horror and racism, we will engage potentially disturbing material, incl. filmic depictions of racial violence, strong language, and scary movie scenes. Our discussions and secondary texts will contextualize this content in the study of popular culture, horror studies, and the history of U.S. racism.

- he seminar will allow students to explore critical perspectives on the United States and analyze how negative views of the U.S. are formed and perpetuated through cultural texts and discourses. There is no scholarly consensus on what the term “Anti-Americanism” exactly refers to, which allows us to explore its varied meanings. We will thus attempt to historicize, contextualize, and more broadly examine notions of “Anti-Americanism” as an object of interdisciplinary Cultural Studies. It will be our task to ask who has meant what by “Anti-Americanism” and when, where, in what ways, and why the term was and is articulated. This includes asking what “Anti-Americanism” tells us about those who express (or criticize the expression of) “Anti-Americanist” sentiments. A core idea of the seminar is to consider how “Anti-Americanism” allows us draw general conclusions about the embattled meaning of “America” more broadly, not least what it can signify outside the United States.
This seminar begins in the first week of the semester.

- The seminar addresses matters of form because form matters. In other words, we will examine scholarly discussions concerning questions of formalization, both old and recent. The assumption is that abstract notions such as cultural imaginaries, discourses, knowledge, among others, would not exists were it not for their formalized dimensions. It aims to consider different forms of formalization: language, narratives, genres, and media. The seminar is meant to facilitate the in-depth study of theories of form and will cover aspects from areas such as rhetoric, discourse analysis, genre and media theory, “new formalisms” and others.
The seminar begins in the first week of the semester.

- : In the last decade or so there has been a surge of interest in the mycological: documentaries, academic texts, films, and video games are replete with discussions of fungus and the fungal. The course examines the history of the fictional uptake of mushrooms (and their close relatives) and how and why they have become so prevalent. Such an examination will move across multiple genres and also engage with scientific and mythological understandings of the fungal world.

- Harry Potter and his friends eat sweets in the British edition but candy in the American edition of their adventures: you have probably learned about differences in pronunciation and vocabulary concerning these two varieties of English, but what about English in Australia, Sri Lanka, or Nigeria? Over the last years, major research projects have been devoted to taking stock of the range of variation found in World Englishes. The course will tackle topics such as verb complementation, negation, definiteness, discourse markers, speech acts and politeness from a comparative perspective. One prominent aspect of this course will be an introduction to corpus linguistic methods and to the International Corpus of English (ICE) project, which provides the basis for much current research on World Englishes.
This course is mainly research-oriented, i.e. students should be prepared to do a lot of reading and to undertake original research. You are encouraged to check out this introductory text in advance: Lange, Claudia & Leuckert, Sven (2020), Corpus linguistics for World Englishes: A Guide for Research. London: Taylor and Francis (available as an ebook via the SLUB).

- Language contact is all around us: we borrow words from other languages, we might switch between our different languages, we encounter street signs and billboards using several languages in the public sphere.
This course will address some of the most relevant issues in the field of Contact Linguistics. We will initially look at the most immediately obvious kind of language contact, namely loanwords and borrowing. We will also get to know about the study of multilingual linguistic landscapes. Classifications of and constraints on code-switching or code-mixing will also feature prominently; after all, language contact primarily manifests itself at the level of multilingual communicative interaction. Finally, we will discuss concepts such as superdiversity and the impact of globalization on the future of English as a contact language.

- Notions such as style, register, genre, text type explicitly or implicitly play an important role in various linguistic disciplines (and not least in literary studies), but are notoriously difficult to pin down. This seminar will approach styles, registers and related concepts both from a theoretical and practical perspective. We will get to know the framework pioneered by Douglas Biber & Susan Conrad in their book Register, Genre, and Style (2009, available as an ebook via the SLUB); this framework for analysing the situational and functional characteristics of styles and registers will enable us to describe and compare different text types. With this in mind, we will focus on a variety of text types such as public speeches, newspaper writing, letters, academic writing, and also new forms of electronic communication and recent problematic developments such as fake news. Our main emphasis will be on contemporary text types, with occasional forays into the history of a particular text type.

- Low achievers, high achievers, neurodivergent learners, learners of all sorts of backgrounds share a classroom.
Behavioural and motivational issues are quite common. Individualization is meant to be the means of choice, so it seems, according to the requirements made in the formal educational guidelines.
Can the implementation of individualized ways of learning and teaching in a standard classroom setting solve the problems? What are they anyway? What are they not, perhaps? The course deals with the question how practitioners could respond to diverse learner needs. Some general principles will be addressed and instructional strategies common in EFL contexts introduced. Since students of all schoolforms are welcome to join, commonly agreed upon foci and details will be negotiated and fixed in the first sessions.

- This course should be taken by all year 2 State Exam (Sekundarstufe) students before their teaching practice (SPÜ). This course will concentrate on learning and practising the language needed for conducting lessons in English. Half of the seminars will focus on the language required for discussing topics like equipment, classroom surroundings, the organisation of class activities, correcting language errors, explaining new words, discipline, games, technical apparatus etc. Homework exercises aim to reinforce and practise the vocabulary and structures presented. The other half of the seminar will involve a simulation whereby the seminar group acts as a school class and two or three students take over, in turns, the role of teacher and present a teaching unit from the school curriculum, devising their own methods and materials. This is then followed by a discussion of the presentation. The students acting as the teacher are required to work as a team and must also discuss their proposals with the course instructor before giving their presentation. Materials: The materials should be purchased at EMF Bürotechnik, Zellescher Weg 21, 01217 Dresden. Please bring these materials to the first meeting Prerequisites: 1: the Entry Test must have been passed. 2: participants must be matriculated for a Secondary school type. 3: the courses in Pronunciation and Intonation, and Grammar must already have been completed.

- In this class, we will together explore the functioning, social dynamics, and rhetoric of conspiracy 'theories'. Reading relevant texts from cultural studies and related disciplines, we will critically study historical as well as contemporary conspiracy 'theories' - and the parallels between these. And we will ask whether conspiracy 'theories' should be called 'theories' in the first place.
One session will be conducted as a special interdisciplinary workshop on Tuesday (!) 11 November together with visiting colleagues from the University of Gothenburg. Further details about the schedule and requirements will be provided in class.

- In 1883, the historian J. R. Seeley published a book entitled 'The Expansion of England'. He argued that only by strengthening and consolidating the Empire, Britain could maintain her dominant status in the world. Seeley's influence was immense and in the ensuing four decades, the Empire expanded, at least territorially, to become 'the largest, the world had ever seen.' But British influence faded in the aftermath of the Second World War. The Empire contracted at a rapidly accelerating rate until the handover of Hong Kong in 1997 marked the end of a special era in British history.
The seminar takes a close look at the history of the British Empire. We will analyse speeches and articles and study selected biographies. Besides the historiography we will look at the changing British attitudes towards their overseas territories. Caught between Jingoism and pragmatism, the British way of ruling their colonies has left lasting imprints in history.
Selected texts will be provided online in the course of the semester.

Wochentag Uhrzeit Ort Durchführung Freitag 2. Doppelstunde POT/0013/U In Präsenz - Beschreibung
- This introductory course to North American cultural studies aims to introduce students to basic concepts, theoretical approaches, and analytical tools in cultural studies. We will base our understanding of (North American) culture on Raymond Williams’ concept of structures of feeling. The concept may seem vague and obscure at a first glance; however, approaching the concept as a method to explore and analyze culture, or in Williams’ words, as “cultural hypothesis” (24), rather than a fixed theory, we can see that it enables an all-encompassing examination of culture based on the idea of lived experience. In this course, as Williams remarks, “we are concerned with meanings and values as they are actively lived and felt” in North American culture/s (23, emphasis mine). In Williams’ understanding, structures of feeling highlights that “there is such a thing as a feeling that is an emergent property shared among people living in collective historical relations of social, economic and political change” (Cefai 278). Culture is borne out of these shared feelings; however, these feelings emerge in a structure, in other words, the fact that an individual feels like this at this time is due to that individual’s relation to that society in the widest sense of the term.
During this class, students will examine how a particular culture is formalized through the lived experiences of its members. Here, the question of what it is like to be in a particular situation at a particular time remains central. I use this emphasis on the seemingly simple yet complicated and messy concept of lived experience to invite students to study North American cultural studies. Culture is comprised through the relations of its members to themselves, their bodies, to each other, to each other’s bodies, to their environment, and to the institutions and power relations that exist in a given society. These relations make up the lived experiences of the collective (structure) and individual (feeling) subjectivities. This introductory class divides the lived experience into three main areas of analysis, namely imaginative, sensorial, and emotional experiences. Throughout the semester, we will look at these experiences with a focus on the United States (and to some extent on Canada) to learn about how they shape the cultural landscape of these nations and, therefore, North American cultural studies.

- Framed by the increasing visibility and reception of Indigenous writers, filmmakers, scholars, and artists who over the past decade have come to reclaim and transform Indigeneous presence in Canadian and American popular culture, this course will dive into the cultural politics of contemporary Indigenous popular music. Like all forms of cultural expression, popular music unfolds through a complex interplay of history, politics, aesthetics, reception, and power, playing a central role in the formation and transformation of cultural identities over time. Featuring genres and styles that include hip hop, classical music, indie rock, electronica, and punk rock, we will look at award-winning bands and artists such as Jeremy Dutcher (Wolastoqiyik), Tanya Tagaq (Inuit), Snotty Nose Rez Kids (Haisla), Black Belt Eagle Scout (Swinomish/Iñupiaq), The Halluci-Nation (Mohawk and Cayuga), and Dead Pioneers (Pyramid Lake Paiute), all of whom in different ways center Indigenous resistance, healing, and flourishing in the present against ongoing colonial imaginaries shaped by anachronistic, racist, and disempowering stereotypes. Many of the artists introduced in this course explicitly confront these stereotypes and remediate the traumatic legacies of settler-colonial oppression and forced assimilation, while revitalizing cultural traditions, and embodying the hybrid realities of contemporary Indigenous life. Drawing on insights in Indigenous Studies, Popular Culture Studies, Affect Studies, and Postcolonial Studies, we will follow an intermedial approach that considers music and lyrics alongside music videos, album art, and other paratextual and contextual material.
This course will include an (optional) field trip to the Karl-May Museum in Radebeul on October 17 and an in-person visit by Gregg Deal, a multimodal Indigenous artist and singer of the celebrated punkrock band Dead Pioneers in January.

- (Ant-)Artic explorations have largely been considered "heroic failures" rather than the maritime successes that the British Admiralty had once hoped and aimed for. With tales of malfunctioning equipment, bad planning, spoiled food, illness, madness, and cannibalism, polar voyaging has enjoyed a particularly ambiguous position in the discourse on British exploratory voyaging. Though both the North and South have been the subject of popular culture, some (Ant-)Artic disasters have recently assumed new geopolitical and cultural significance in debates on national identities, national heroes and the "theatre of exploration" (Lewis-Jones 2020).
In this seminar we will trace the history of British polar voyages, spanning the time from the late 16th century until the voyages of 'modern explorers', and will explore the culture and politics of polar exploration and the making of its heroes. Through a variety of texts, from poems, to novels, to films and series, we well examine the (inter-)national, (geo-)political, cultural and social implications that the British strive to discover and govern earth's most northern and southern territories brought with and explore debates and controversies over Englishness/Britishness, patriotism, class, gender and colonialism.

- It is a truth universally acknowledged that few British authors are as popular and prominent as Jane Austen, may this refer to their original work or the adaptations and merchandise they inspired. The work of just as few authors can be considered as simplified or romanticised by readers and the film industry alike, considering that the name (or brand?) ‘Austen’ nowadays mostly seems to signify love, landscapes, and men in tight breeches.
This seminar delves into the phenomenon of ‘Austenmania’, Austen’s rise to a pop-cultural icon and international brand. We will examine her original work to get an understanding of her own special type of social criticism, with a particular focus on issues of gender and class. Investigating the tradition of heritage cinema, we will not only turn to questions of national identity by reflecting on specific strategies of adaptation, but also see how Austen has been increasingly romanticised and commercialised. In this regard, we will furthermore look into the Americanisation of Austen through the lens of the ‘chick flick’ and Jerusha Hess’s Austenland (2013). - Literatur

- The concept of uplift, that an animal or human being (either at an individual or species level) can be evolved or improved through accelerated and artificial procedures, is common to both science fiction and social and political theory. Whether by genetic, epigenetic, technological, or social means, uplift has been bound up with implicit and explicit racist, colonial, and eugenical notions for the past 200 years or more. This course will look at this history of the concept of uplift across literature in all its historical complexity.

- This introductory course provides a foundation for the study of literature, teaching the concepts and methods necessary for reading and analysing texts. Our object of study includes the elements and functions of literary genres conventionally classified as poetry, prose, and drama, in addition to non-fictional genres and non-printed media such as film and documentary. Through an introduction to a wealth of critical approaches in literary theory, from Marxist to decolonial to feminist reading praxes and more, this course will equip you to interpret and analyse texts of all kinds in a critical, academic fashion.
This class requires active participation. In addition to a mandatory tutorial, all theoretical and primary texts must be read on a weekly basis in order to pass the course. Time slots for the tutorial will be announced in the first class.

- Video games have been dismissed as trivial, childish, or nerdy and regarded as a marginal form of entertainment. Yet such dismissals are increasingly untenable. As of 2024, video games constitute one of the fastest-growing global entertainment markets, drawing not only substantial financial investment but also significant amounts of players. Far from peripheral, games now shape cultural life in ways comparable to film, television, and literature.
Despite this growing cultural weight, video games remain comparatively underexamined within academic research. This seminar seeks to redress that imbalance. Together, we will approach video games in an academic context, asking what kinds of questions literature and linguistics in particular can bring to the study of games.
Our work will be structured around two primary perspectives. First, we will approach games as texts, not only in terms of how they tell stories, but also in relation to their underlying structures and modes of interaction. Second, we will consider the broader cultural negotiations that games stage: questions of identity, gender, sexuality, memory, history, and the shaping of cultural spaces and practices.
Alongside literary and cultural approaches, we will also attend to the linguistic dimensions of video games. They generate new forms of digital discourse, draw on and reshape narrative conventions, and foster interactive communication between players and game worlds as well as among player communities. Thus, video games open up fertile ground for linguistic inquiry – inviting us to consider how language both reflects and produces meaning in digital spaces. - Literatur

- In its basic design the class is part of the Linguistics module for all first-year students (as an alternative to “Introduction to Diachronic Linguistics”). You may choose freely which version of the “Introduction” you prefer. You only need to pass one of them.
Using language is terribly simple – everyone does it every day. How to describe language and language use is the topic of this course. Together we will explore the structure of this highly complex and efficient mode of expression in its different functions. We will begin with the smallest distinctive units in language, the speech sounds, and work our way towards more complex units, namely words, phrases, and, finally, sentences. In addition, we will discuss the notion of ‘meaning’ and how meaning can be both context-dependent and context-independent. Finally, we will consider different varieties of English around the globe as well as the basics of doing linguistic research. In contrast to the “Introduction to Diachronic Linguistics”, this class focuses mainly on Present-Day English and, accordingly, provides a more detailed look at current forms of English.
The introductory course is accompanied by a tutorial (1 h per week). The specific time slots will be announced in the first session.

- We all have one, we all use them to refer to family, friends, colleagues but also cities, villages, rivers or mountains. Even though we might not be aware of it, but names surround us in our everyday lives and interactions.
People have always had the tendency to trace their family roots – including the family name. Still, this is not the only possible focus of the study of names, onomastics. In this seminar methods and theories in name studies will be discussed and used as tools to analyse historical developments of proper names and toponyms, to investigate semantic changes as well as developments caused by language contact.
In addition, the seminar will also address names in a synchronic real-world context but also in the realm of fiction. Thus, in the end the participants will be able to name why He-who must-not-be-named bears no name and why Gandalf is not only a mere name.

At a beginner's level you will be introduced to some important historical aspects that shaped the Middle Ages in England, some of which still influencing our contemporary culture. In addition to that, we will also look into linguistic developments that have affected the English language over the course of centuries to shape what you know as Present Day English. - There are nearly 400 million native speakers of English worldwide and many who speak it as a second or foreign language, making it one of the most widely spoken languages in the world. Despite speaking the same language, some English speakers may struggle to understand each other and so it might happen that, for instance, a speaker from Los Angeles can hardly follow a speaker from Glasgow in a conversation. Each variety of English has a distinctive sound that distinguishes it from others. This class will delve into the sound – or rather the sounds – of selected varieties of the English language, as well as explore their historical background.

- Literatur

- This course deals with basic and advanced grammar concepts and targets the particular problems foreigners in general and Germans in particular commonly have with English grammar. This course builds on the knowledge of grammar gained at school, but whereas “Abitur” classes often concentrate on communicative skills, this university course will focus on accuracy and knowledge of grammatical structures. Although students have encountered and practised most aspects of English grammar at school, many do not control them well. Using a contrastive approach, this class will address the English verb system, the peculiarities of nouns and their determiners, part-of-speech analysis, parsing, gerunds vs. infinitives, collocations, phrasal verbs, types of subordinate clauses, modal verbs, word order (inversion etc), and adjective vs. adverb problems. Exercises will include: gap-filling, transformations, error correction, translation and sentence analysis. Since the philosophy of the class is partly based on a contrastive approach, translation from German into English will also play a role. Reference books will be recommended in class.

- This ‘kombinierte Sprachprüfung’ concentrates on pronunciation and intonation skills but also involves competence in grammar. There are two exam sections, an oral exam, which tests spoken language skills, and a written exam, which tests: (1) phonetic transcription (2) the usage of verbs and tenses, as well the explanation of rules using grammatical terminology Students have to choose between British and American English but the course content is very similar. Regarding pronunciation and intonation, we aim to identify the students’ problem areas, tune in students’ ears to pronunciation style and speech rhythm (stress patterns, weak forms, linking), provide practical information on articulatory phonetics and (some) phonology of English, practise interpreting and writing passages in phonetic script, identify characteristic segmental and suprasegmental features in given (oral and/or written) passages, establish islands of perfection (speaking complex passages in near-perfect form) as stepping-stones to progress and improvement. The skills and knowledge gained here will be developed in the year two Listening and Speaking course. Parts of the seminars will be dedicated to practising and describing grammatical phenomena concerning verbs and tenses. Materials: 1) “The England Pronunciation Course” book and 2 CDs (€23) used in British English classes Book (and CDs) will be sold in class - please bring €23 to the first meeting 2).

Wochentag Uhrzeit Ort Durchführung Freitag 1. Doppelstunde W48/0003/U In Präsenz - Beschreibung

- The aims of this course are to raise awareness of lexical range and lexical variety (geographical, stylistic), to identify recurring lexical problem areas of German speakers of English (as far as practicable also of speakers of English with mother-tongues other than English), to improve personal performance in appropriateness, precision and range of lexical expression, to increase familiarity with deduction techniques, to provide some theoretical information on the structure of (English) vocabulary as far as of practical help, and to inform students about learning materials and techniques. In the course, students work on common problematic lexical areas, extract vocabulary (words, word groups) from texts, establish personal vocabulary lists, practise using dictionaries and thesauri, work out word fields, identify and use word formation processes, practise variations in range and variety of written and oral expression, and experiment with different learning techniques. Materials: The materials should be purchased at EMF Bürotechnik, Zellescher Weg 21, 01217 Dresden. - We recommend that students take this Listening and Speaking course before their period of residence in an English-speaking country. This course aims firstly to familiarise students with naturally spoken English and a variety of accents, thereby improving listening comprehension skills; secondly we aim to improve students' own general speaking skills by encouraging students to adopt aspects of what they hear from the listening exercises into their own speaking. Spoken language will be analysed in detail, especially those aspects which hinder comprehension e.g. contractions, linking, etc. The skills and knowledge practised and gained in Year 1 Pronunciation and Intonation will be further developed and refined. Students will also practise the rhetorical skills necessary in giving presentations and short talks. This part of the course should help students give better papers in other seminars. We shall also deal with grammatical problems as they occur. There will be two main tests: (1) a test in listening skills in the form of a written exam, and (2) a speaking test at the end of the semester. Materials: Materials should be purchased at EMF Bürotechnik, Zellescher Weg 21, 01217 Dresden.

Wochentag Uhrzeit Ort Durchführung Montag 6. Doppelstunde W48/0101/U In Präsenz - Beschreibung

- In Rupert Kipling’s famous poem “The White Man's Burden”, the British are depicted as a nation that altruistically sacrifices itself to save the world. We will take a closer look at this claim and ask questions such as: “How did the British manage to create an Empire that covered nearly a quarter of the world's land surface and to rule over 458 million people?”, “What were the motives behind this extraordinary expansion”, and “How did the British – or other colonial powers – justify it?”
This introductory seminar focuses on the close reading of exemplary (post)colonial short stories by writers such as W. Somerset Maugham, Joseph Conrad, Doris Lessing but also by Qaisra Shahraz, Salman Rushdie and Hanif Kureishi to critically discuss the British Empire and its aftermath. Moreover, this seminar offers a short introduction to Postcolonialism and its historical background to better contextualize our readings. Since this course is also aimed at students who have not yet attended the lecture “Introduction to Literary Studies”, a few sessions will focus on the question of how to read and analyze literary texts as well as on the concept of literature. - Literatur

- Literatur

- Language and space are closely connected. We see and hear this important connection every day: in the streets when we hear a local accent (which changes depending on where we are), on TV when an actor uses a non-standard variety to portray a certain heritage, in songs in which musicians proudly flaunt their home dialect to evoke a certain image. In many cases, the link between language use and geographic location is highly complex, for instance in megacities where the lines between language varieties are increasingly blurred.
The distinct consideration of linguistics and geography as interconnected fields of study is at the centre of ‘Geolinguistics’, which we will discuss from a range of perspectives in this course. Questions we will address are, among others: How is language made visible in public spaces? In which ways do urban vs. rural language use differ from each other? How can geotagging be employed in the study of linguistic features? Which role do regional variants play for their speakers? How does migration shape language use?
As part of this class, all students will be required to come up with, carry out, and present an individual research project. While the tools for doing so will be provided in class, please be prepared to work actively.

- What is translation? The answer seems simple: It is a transfer of words from one language into another. If it was that easy a task, the results of machine translated texts would not leave us puzzled, only “understanding railway station”. Thus, this seemingly simple question we will try to answer in the course of this seminar – and we might come to realise that it is everything but simple. In order to do so, it shall be explained what translation actually is and how its understanding and practice has developed over time. We will also look critically into the different approaches towards translation and the respective vastness of theories. Additionally, we will also investigate the manifold linguistic as well as cultural stumbling blocks of translating texts. These linguistic peculiarities are especially a challenge for the many attempts of successful machine translation which we will also critically analyse and evaluate. A final outlook into the presentation of translation in science-fiction will then conclude the seminar with an imaginary future outlook.
Note: In order to participate in in-class exercises, command of the German language is mandatory.

- From Puritan constructions of wilderness to the colonization of Mars, the North American imaginary is fundamentally shaped by ambiguous and interconnected attitudes towards nature and technology. While ideas of “Nature” have been employed to both legitimize Indigenous displacement and anchor American constructions of freedom and self-reliance, visions of technology oscillate between fantasies of techno-utopia and deep-seated anxieties around ecological catastrophe and the disruptions of humanist subjectivity. Sketching a trajectory from the early modern period to the present, this survey lecture offers a framework for understanding the intersection of environmental and technological imaginaries as central to the development of North American literature and key to historicizing the cultural conditions of the Anthropocene. Drawing on a range of theoretical perspectives from ecocriticism, critical posthumanism, and speculative fiction studies, we will explore the continuities and ruptures that lead from romanticist views of the sublime to Golden Age science fiction, from the figure of the pioneer to the engineer and space cowboy, from the environmental aesthetics of modernism to cyberpunk and ecological entanglement, from the machine age to the technosphere and climate fiction, from the colonial politics of wilderness to environmental justice movements and Indigenous futurism. With examples from a broad range of genres and modes (incl. nonfiction essays, poetry, novels, short stories, film, and music), we will revisit key stages of the North American literary tradition and explore critical dialogues with decolonial and feminist critiques of North American progress narratives and poetics of environmental placemaking.

- In everyday contexts, we tend to think of memory as something individual, a kind of mental storage space where we keep our past. Yet, as Maurice Halbwachs argued in the 1920s, even seemingly personal memories are in fact collective: “No memory is possible outside frameworks used by people living in society to determine and retrieve their recollections.” Memories are always partial, selective, and shaped by the present in which they are recalled. This lecture explores how collective memory is constituted, transmitted, and contested. We will consider examples ranging from family customs and religious traditions to national commemorations, monuments, and heritage sites. We will also discuss contested memory – such as colonial remembrance and Brexit nostalgia – and ask how remembering and forgetting operate in the service of power. Particular attention will be paid to the ethical and political implications of memory: whose voices are heard, whose memories are silenced, and how memory both affirms and challenges dominant ideologies.

- This lecture will offer a broad perspective on the study of language(s) in relationship to the societies in which they are spoken. We will first explore different approaches to some of the by now classical concerns of sociolinguistics – how factors such as age, status, gender, ethnicity influence our linguistic choices and in how far attitudes – our own as well as other people’s – towards accents and dialects pervade our perception of speakers and shape our ideas of what is the ‘right’ language.
We will then move on to issues that are generally subsumed under the label ‘sociology of language’, covering topics such as linguistic diversity and (in)equality, bilingualism and the treatment of minority languages in education, language conflicts and language planning.

- This survey lecture course provides an overview of US cultural history from the early European colonization of North America to recent moments in the United States. Taking a transnational perspective and considering the notion of place-making as a point of departure, it surveys crucial places, periods, and topics relevant to American cultural history. It heightens an understanding of the dynamics of American cultural history by focusing on key chronotopes—moments and sites—that have contributed to shaping an understanding of it. Among other aspects, the course highlights how chronotopes relate to the emergence of what “America” means to different demographic groups. It also considers the medial and discursive conditions that shape an understanding of chronotopes today.
The lecture course begins in the first week of the semester.

- “Can the Subaltern Speak?”, “Who has a voice?”, “How does Othering work?”, “To which extent is literature political?”, and “What is Post-Post Colonial?” In this lecture, we are going to find answers to these questions while reading excerpts of some of the best-known postcolonial novels of the last 20 years. We will discuss excerpts by Salman Rushdie, Arundhati Roy, Zadie Smith, Hanif Kureishi, Anuk Arudpragasam and others from the perspectives of postcolonial theory. This means that we will take a look at the processes of identity and community building after colonialism, discuss concepts such as ‘hybridity’, ‘globalisation’ and ‘neo-colonialism’ and focus on key concepts and theorists such as Edward Said, Homi K. Bhabha and Gayatri Spivak. Moreover, there will be guest lectures and interventions from colleagues from the University of Colombo. Although the lecture is called "Post-Colonial Theory and Literature II", it is also open to and recommended for students who have not yet come into contact with postcolonial theory or literature – they will be given a concise introduction in the first two weeks.
