Guest Lecture: The Gaza War: An International Criminal Law View from South Africa (Prof. Windell Nortje)
Gastvorlesung „The Gaza War: An International Criminal Law View from South Africa“ von Herrn Prof. Windell Nortje (University of Westen Cape, ZAF) am Donnerstag, den 11.12.2025.
Prof. Nortje, Associate Professor of Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure at the Faculty of Law at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) and a qualified advocate at the High Court of South Africa, conducts extensive research on criminal procedural issues, sexual violence against male soldiers and the decolonization of higher education - with a particular focus on educational access for detainees.
In his lecture, Prof. Nortje will shed light on South Africa's role in promoting international criminal accountability in the context of the Gaza war. Starting from the constitutional foundations and the country's long-standing human rights orientation, he will analyze South Africa's approach before the International Criminal Court and its clear support for the International Criminal Court's arrest warrants. He will also show how the legal framework, political identity and legacy of apartheid shape South Africa's approach to global justice. A further focus will be on why no genocide charges have been brought in relation to the ICC arrest warrants.
The event offers an excellent opportunity to deal with complex and highly topical issues of international law that go beyond the scope of regular lectures. There will also be room for questions and discussion afterwards - an ideal opportunity to talk directly to an expert.
The event will take place from 18:30 - 20:00 in the ABS/1-01/U of TU Dresden. All interested parties are cordially invited to attend. The language of discussion will be English.
