Studying in the "White Angel"
- A university campus in a baroque town house
Studying at IHI Zittau means studying in historical buildings of the baroque old town of Zittau, with its numerous monuments! With the exception of some laboratory facilities all teaching and administrative structures of IHI Zittau are located in the historical centre - around the corner from cosy pubs and small shops.
The IHI head office is situated at Markt 23, in a building dating back to 1796, which until 1949 had been a famous inn and later the hotel "The White Angel". During World War II, the building temporarily served as a military hospital. In 1949, the "School of Electrical Engineering" - the precursor of today's IHI Zittau - moved in. The "White Angel" became a teaching and administrative building, but also served as a dormitory and cafeteria. Since 1993, IHI Zittau has been situated in this building.
The vaulted cellars dating back to the 16th century were temporarily used as a student pub. Nowadays, they can only be visited in guided tours.
A part of the lectures take place in the neighbouring edifice at Markt 21 - an Art Nouveau building dating back to 1912 (conversion of a residential house from 1823). In this building a household goods and ironware shop was located until 1991. Further seminar rooms and laboratories can be found in other buildings throughout the city of Zittau.
Some courses of the programme "Biodiversity & Collection Management" are held at the Senckenberg Gesellschaft's facilities in Görlitz and other Senckenberg sites in Germany
