Experience & shape biodiversity with the meadow case
As part of the project “Experiencing and shaping biodiversity - promoting the SDGs (BioSDGs) ”1 , the Biodiversity Working Group2 has developed a meadow case. The meadow case was developed for cooperation between universities and schools in Dresden and other Saxon schools (with a focus on high schools) and is intended for use in the 9th and 10th grades in the biology subject as part of the examination of the biodiversity topic. With little preparation, a lot of practical relevance and fun, students and teachers can experience and understand the topics of anatomy and physiology of seed plants, microcosm meadow, ecology, biodiversity and biological problems of globalisation.
Colleagues from Dresden University of Technology, Dresden University of Applied Sciences and Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences recently came together to test the prototypes and give their feedback.
After a brief introduction to the importance of biodiversity by Lisa Junge and Tina Werchan, the group went straight into the field. The plant morphology was examined, and the plant species were identified using a meadow scout or app. It was also exciting to see what conclusions could be drawn from the plants about the nature of the soil. Playful brainteasers and experiments on biodiversity and ecosystem services allowed the testers to grasp the connections quickly.
Result: A great tool, this meadow case! With little effort and a lot of fun, pupils and teachers can experience sustainable education for the conservation of biodiversity.
The testers have provided good tips for optimising the meadow case, and the finished meadow cases will soon be available for schools to borrow!
Do you have any questions or are you interested in the Wiesenkoffer or would you like to get involved in the Biodiversity Working Group? Then get in touch:
1 The project "Experience and shape biodiversity: Promoting the SDGs (BioSDGs)" was awarded the eku - Future Prize for Energy, Climate, Environment in the eku idee category! The prize, awarded by the Saxon State Ministry for Energy, Climate Protection, Environment and Agriculture (SMEKUL), recognizes outstanding ideas for climate, environmental and nature conservation in Saxony.
2 The BioSDGs project uses the university as a “real laboratory” for biodiversity conservation and involves students, teaching staff and society. The Biodiversity Working Group is always happy to hear from interested parties who would like to support the implementation of new ideas and cordially invites you to a joint plenary session.
