Deutschlandfunk Interview on the Role of Business in Protecting Democracy
How can companies contribute to the stability of liberal democracies, and is such engagement part of their societal responsibility? These questions were the focus of an interview with Prof. Dr. Markus Scholz, Chair of Responsible Management at the International Institute (IHI) Zittau, TU Dresden, on the Deutschlandfunk radio programme Wirtschaft am Mittag.
In conversation with journalist Dorothee Holz, Prof. Scholz discussed the challenges currently facing democratic societies and the ways in which democratic erosion can affect the institutional foundations of economic activity. Issues such as the rule of law, institutional stability, societal openness, and trust in democratic institutions are not only political concerns but also essential conditions for long-term business success.
Particular attention was given to the challenges facing Eastern German regions. Questions of labour shortages, international competitiveness, and regional attractiveness illustrate the close relationship between economic development and democratic conditions.
The interview highlights the societal relevance of research conducted at IHI Zittau and TU Dresden at the intersection of business, democracy, and societal transformation. It also demonstrates how academic insights on responsible management and democratic resilience can contribute to public debate and reach audiences beyond academia.
