Biography
Markus Scholz is a professor of business administration, specializing in responsible management, at Dresden University of Technology.
His research focuses on the areas of “innovation and transformation,” “strategic management,” and “business ethics” (in particular, “business and human rights” and “political engagement and political responsibility of companies”). The research contexts of his conceptual and empirical research include multinational corporations, family businesses, governmental organizations, and non-governmental organizations.
After studying business administration, economics, and philosophy at Leibniz University Hannover and the London School of Economics and Political Science, among others, his academic positions in teaching and research took him to the Centre for Philosophy of Natural and Social Science at the London School of Economics and the Zicklin Center for Business Ethics Research at the Wharton Business School, among others. In Vienna, he also founded and headed the 'Institute for Business Ethics and Sustainable Strategy' (IBES) of the Vienna Chamber of Commerce and the Josef Ressel Center for 'Collective Action and Responsible Management' (CARe), funded by the Christian Doppler Society. In addition, Professor Scholz served as European Chairman of the Microeconomics of Competitiveness Network organized by Harvard Business School. Since 2018, in addition to his position at TU Dresden, he has been a visiting scholar and adjunct professor at INSEAD.
His research has been published in leading international journals, including Business Ethics Quarterly, Business & Society, California Management Review, Journal of Business Ethics, MIT Sloan Management Review, Organization Studies, Organization Theory, and The British Journal for Philosophy of Science.
In addition, his expertise is frequently featured in international mass media, including ARD, ARTE, Die Presse, Der Standard, Die Zeit, FAZ, Forbes, Handelsblatt, NZZ, ORF, Spiegel Online, Wirtschaftswoche, and the Financial Times.
Markus Scholz is a member of committees of international companies, non-governmental organizations, and scientific communities. Since 2022, he has been the scientific coordinator of the “Business Ethics” working group of the Schmalenbach Society.
In addition to his academic activities, Professor Scholz advises public institutions and companies in the areas of “business strategy,” “CSR,” “responsible management,” “transformation,” and “sustainability” and is regularly in demand as a keynote speaker and trainer.
