Field Trip to the Landeskrone
On April 28, 2026, Remmer Sassen and Ronja Paleit from the Chair of Business Administration, esp. Environmental Management, together with their students from the chairs’ 'Regionality and Sustainability' seminar at IHI Zittau, took part in an interdisciplinary field trip to the Landeskrone in Görlitz. The trip was organised as part of the EU-funded Interreg project, FENIX-Projekts (Field Education by Interdisciplinary Excursions), which promotes the professional development of teachers and educators in environmental education at out-of-school learning sites. The project aims to improve learning outcomes by providing practical, interdisciplinary educational programmes.
Project participants include the Technical University of Liberec, the Technical University of Dresden, the Institute for Interdisciplinary Higher Education (IHI) Zittau at TU Dresden, the Ralsko Geopark, the North Bohemian Museum in Liberec and the Senckenberg Museum of Natural History in Görlitz.
As part of the excursion programme, participants visited the slopes of the Landeskrone in the morning. Exploring the connections between geomorphology, the mountain's exposure and the local flora. The seminar participants further focused on the question of how local geographical and ecological conditions can influence economic developments, for example in tourism, nature conservation or sustainable resource use.
After a group lunch break at the summit (Photo 1 above), where they enjoyed a 360-degree view from the observation tower (Photos 2 and 3 below), the participants deepened their understanding of the geological history of the former volcano. These findings were conveyed in a playful manner and re-enacted in an interactive activity, a method which offered valuable teaching ideas to the educators in the excursion group and provided amusement for all participants (Photo 4 below).
The rest of the afternoon was spent by the entire department team on a team-building event in Görlitz. Read more about it here.
