MAYA-CO2: TU Dresden and CICY Mérida sign Cooperation Agreement
On 11 March 2026, an important milestone was reached for the MAYA-CO2 research initiative in Mérida, Mexico: the Centro de Investigación Científica de Yucatán (CICY) and TU Dresden signed a joint cooperation agreement. Albert Martin Baena Regel, doctoral researcher at the Chair of Business Administration, esp. Environmental Management, was present at the signing in person.
MAYA-CO2 investigates how the brown macroalgae Sargassum, which has been washing ashore in massive quantities along Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico coastlines for years, can be transformed into durable, climate-friendly building materials. As the Mexican project partner, CICY contributes laboratory facilities and expertise in material development and physical testing of the building materials.
The agreement forms the basis for joint research activities within the framework of a planned DFG proposal under the funding instrument "Cooperation with Developing Countries".
